chapter twenty-four

I open my door to see Nick sitting on the bed.

"You okay?" He asks when I walk in.

"I'm not sure."

We sit in silence for a little. Sapnap doesn't force me to tell him what happened, which I can appreciate.

After a while I turned to him. "Do you want to go do something?"

We ended up going to iHop even though it's lunch time. We sat in silence while we ordered. After the waitress left, Nick turned to me.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"I don't even know what there is to talk about. LIke I dont even know why he's so upset. Nothing happened." I play with my straw wrapper while I talk.

"Did you tell him that?"

"Yes, which is why I'm so confused. He should trust me."

"I'm going to be honest, y/n." Nick takes a deep breath. "You are an absolutely gorgeous woman. Maybe he's just jealous that you and I are getting so close?"

I bite my lip. "You might be right."

Alex and I used to talk 24/7, now I also talk to Nick that often too. Maybe Alex doesnt like that he isn't my only best friend. Maybe he feels like I replaced him.

Nobody could replace him.

Either way he shouldn't have acted out the way he did today. He's acting like a jealous boyfriend when we are nothing more than friends. He should understand that.

Then a thought hits me for just a millisecond. Could we be more than friends?

I shut the door on the thought as soon as I think it. We are friends. That's all.

After iHop we go to this little arcade near my apartment. I dont want to go home yet, in case Alex is there.

Nick and I spend a lot of time going head to head at the air hockey table. In the end, he wins more tickets.

He goes to the counter. "Can I get the panda stuffed animal?"

The girl at the counter hands him the panda. He turns to me. "For you, beautiful."

I blush as I take the toy. "Thank you."

He's called me beautiful a thousand times, but that time it felt different. That time brought butterflies.

I really enjoy spending time with Nick. I know so many little details about him, but today I feel like we connected on a different level. Today has felt very different.

We decided to walk in the park for a little bit.

"Can I ask you a question y/n?" Nick asks as we walk down the path.

"Yeah what's up?"

"I was just wondering," he scratches his neck in nervousness, "what exactly we are?"

"What do you mean?"

"It's just that... that we've been getting really close and sometimes it feels flirty.. So I was wondering what we are? Boyfriend/girlfriend? Talking?... just friends?"

I take a deep breath. I was not expecting that.

What were we? I thought we were just friends. Sometimes it does feel a little flirty, but that's a bit right?

I bite my lip while I think. I like Nick, but not like that. I don't usually get butterflies when I'm with him. I just feel like he's Nick.

Until today.

Today we broke a wall down, and I'm not sure we can go back.

It might be because I'm trying to push Alex out of my mind completely after our argument. Maybe I am just confused.

He's a great guy, don't get me wrong, but I just don't know if he's the guy for me.

I decide to be honest. "I thought we were just friends, but I'm not sure. I feel like we've connected in a different way lately."

He stops walking for a second. "You've felt that too?"

I smile. "Yeah, I guess I'm just seeing you in a new light or something."

This time he smiles. "I'm glad we're on the same page, then."

We're standing closer than I thought. He gives me a look as if to ask if he could kiss me. I give him a little nod.

He leans in and gives me a kiss. He pulls away and my stomach fills with butterflies.

We finish our walk hand in hand.

Maybe Nick and I could really have something special.
