"Guess who." Someone covered your eyes from behind, they tried disgusting their voice with an English accent but you knew immediately who it was. "Hmm, gonna go out on a whim and say it's my girlfriend?" Jo giggled and removed her hands, kissing your cheek before moving to stand in front of you. "How'd you know?" "You're the only one brave enough to pull something like that on me. Everyone except you, Jackson and Meredith are scared of me." Jo tilted her head to the side. "That's true. You're a puppy really though." "Yeah? Try telling the one on my service today. They missed a glaringly obvious concussion." "Robbins did mention you were a little tetchy." You raised your eyebrow. "In a nice way, she likes you. You know that." "Yeah but I'm not Alex. I'm second best." You sighed. "No you're the best. Especially to me." Jo lifted your chin so you met her eyes. "You seriously underestimate yourself and I hate it when you do that." "Y/L/N!" Robbins called your name. "I got an appendectomy, I could use another pair of hands, wanna scrub in?" "Coming!" You called back. "I gotta go." "We still on for my place tonight?" "Yeah, I'll see you at 6?" "6." You nodded, already walking to where Robbins was. "So, you and Jo, it's been months and you're still a thing." "What's that supposed to mean?" You asked Arizona insecurely. "Nothing, just asking how's it going." Arizona nudged you as you both scrubbed in for the operation. "Yeah, it's going good." "Part of me thinks Alex made a huge mistake by leaving her, but I have to say, she seems happier with you than I ever saw her with Alex." You smiled at her words. "Really?" "Really. And hey, you're not second best." "You heard that?" You sighed. "I'm sorry if I made you feel inadequate. You're a good doctor Y/N, don't compare yourself to anyone, especially Karev. He wasn't always a good guy, he used to be a total ass." "Worse than the guy who left his wife through a letter?" You scoffed. "He grew as a person over the years. He's a good doctor, he always was, but as a person, man did he suck in the beginning. You, however, have been great in every way since you got here. You're good, but you can be amazing, just keep going." Arizona said pointedly as she shook her hands dry and leant her back against the door to go into the OR. You sighed. 'Good' wasn't good enough to you. You didn't like to admit it but you were a perfectionist, and it often made life difficult when it came to self worth. At the end of the day, you were waiting outside the hospital on the bench for Jo who came over to you right on time. "Hey. Are you okay?" You looked up at her in confusion. "You never sit on the bench when you're waiting for me." Jo explained to you. "Yeah, let's head back." You said. Jo sensed something was off, but let it be for now. When you crawled into bed early and didn't speak, sitting up staring at nothing, Jo knew something was wrong, so she got in the bed and sat with you. "What's wrong Y/N?" You shook your head, tears building in your eyes. "I'm just sad." Jo frowned at the crack in your voice and wrapped an arm around you, pulling you into her. "I don't wanna be that person, but have you taken your meds today?" You admitted to Jo you'd struggled with depression and that sometimes it got really bad, so she knew what she was getting into. But Jo said it didn't faze her and you believed her, especially since she'd gone through it herself. "Yes." You mumbled, leaning into her body. "How long have you been feeling shitty?" Your girlfriend asked, wanting an honest answer. "Truthfully." She added. You felt tears spill down your cheeks as you spoke. "A few weeks." "Y/N.." Jo said gently, trying to meet your eyes but you avoided eye contact, pulling away from her. Jo didn't take it personally, she knew it was your way of protecting yourself and those around you. She didn't like it, but she understood it. "Why didn't you talk to me?" She asked. "I didn't wanna be a burden." You mumbled shamefully. "You're not, you're never a burden." Jo climbed closer on the bed to sit in front of you on her knees. "Can you look at me babygirl?" You hesitantly met her eyes, you couldn't resist when she called you that, and she knew that. "You can always talk to me. I'm here for the good and the bad." Jo cradled your face in her hands, smoothly wiping your tears away with her thumbs. "Am I good enough for you?" You asked hesitantly. Jo was taken aback by the question. "Who said you're not?" "No one. It's just, Robbins seemed surprised we were still together." Jo's eyes flashed with anger at Arizona for making you doubt yourself. She'd deal with her later, you were top priority. "Of course you're good enough for me, you're great." "I'm not when im like this." You scoffed slightly. "Just because you feel bad doesn't mean you are. I promised you I was in it for the long haul didn't I?" You nodded, a whimper catching in your throat. Jo frowned. "C'mere baby." Jo pulled you into her arms instinctively but you didn't resist, nestling your face in the crook of her neck. "I love you." She said in a soft reassuring tone, kissing your cheek. "I love you too." You mumbled in reply. "I'm gonna kill Robbins." Jo growled in a low voice. "It's not her fault. I've felt shitty for weeks." You instantly defended her, knowing what Jo could be like when she was angry and defending people she cared about. "Well she didn't help." Jo huffed. "She didn't know. Arizona wasn't thinking when she spoke. Everyone makes mistakes, it's fine." Jo pulled away so she was facing you. "It's not fine. You're crying and you're doubting yourself and how happy you make me, and I never want you to do that." "I'm sorry." "Don't do that, don't apologise to me. You have nothing to be sorry for."
