"There you go buddy, Gia and I are gonna go home now. Will you be okay here?"
"Yeah. The nurses are kind, and now you helped me change, I feel better,"
"Awesome. I'm gonna let you keep hold of your dad's phone,"
Rider nodded and I kissed his burning hot head, smoothing his hair back from his face. I was really worried, and wanted them to do the surgery now, but I knew we had to wait for the less invasive treatment to have a go first.
"Sleep as much as you like, and make sure you eat and drink plenty,"
"I will sleep now,"
"Good. Sage is all safe, Gia and I are safe, and dad is in good hands,"
"And I am safe,"
"Yes you are. See you tomorrow buddy,"
He blew me a kiss and I sent one in return, then took Gia's hand and took her out the room.
She shuffled beside me and shivered, probably cold now she was in an empty hallway instead of a bed, and she didn't have much to say.
"Do you want to go and see your dad?"
"Yeah,"
"You do?"
"Yeah,"
"Okay, come with me,"
We took the lift and went towards his room, Gia stopping, and reaching up. I picked her up and she nestled her head in my shoulder.
We weren't far from the room, and I put her down outside, quietly opening the door. She stood twisting her hands together, hesitating.
And as she walked over, her eyebrows twitched, and her lip began to tremble.
"Dad,"
She held his hand and then leant over to hug him, resting her head next to his. He was still hooked up to machines, and now a ventilator.
"Daddy. Wake up. I miss you,"
I sat down and watched his heart monitor beep, machines surrounding him. The room was blank, and unwelcoming, but it's not like he could see to care.
"I hurt my neck, and Sage hurt their head, and Rider hurt his arm. Sage went back to the hospital, and Rider might need surgery, and everything is going wrong without you. You make everything go right,"
She tried to climb into the bed but I put my hand on her side and pulled her back, rubbing her back.
"I wanna cuddle him,"
"We can't, and I know that's really hard, but we have to try,"
"I don't like this,"
She began to cry and pressed her head into my chest, her body shaking. I was worried about what this would do to Gia. She obviously had the deepest connection with Calum out of the kids, and I hoped her progress wouldn't go backwards.
But as I held her tightly in my arms, I had little confidence.
"How about we go home? Or go to Ashton's house?"
"Ashton's house,"
"I'll give him a ring,"
"Is Sage gone for four weeks?"
"No, hopefully not. Come on, let's go to the car,"
She gave Calum a kiss on the cheek and then wiped it dry for him and left, angrily wiping her tears.
