He had to run. The Masks we're closing in on him. Their thin green bodies, barely recognizable as humanoid, scrambled for any perchance to push themselves closer to Ranboo. Smilers popped out of the ground in front of the boy, snapping a his ankles and driving him back into the horde of Masks. Ranboo had to weapons. No way to defend himself as he was torn apart by the monsters. A man with a porcelain white smiley face mask slowly walked towards him. He screamed for Phil, for Techno, for anyone to help him. But he was alone.
Ranboo woke up with a jolt.
"Ranboo!" Tubbo yelled, hugging the taller, "holy shit! Are you okay!?"
"Wha-wha-wha-" Ranboo gasped.
"Dude, you were screaming in your sleep!" Tommy sighed as he sat back, "are you okay!?"
Ranboo nodded quickly, "Y-yeah, I'm fine. It-it was just a nightmare..."
"We tried waking you up, you sounded terrified." Tubbo said.
"It's okay. I'm fine." Ranboo told them.
Tommy gave him a look, "okay... Well, Wil is making pancakes."
Ranboo nodded. The three boys made their way downstairs. Wilbur was in the kitchen, humming to himself as he stacked pancakes on a plate. The older looked up, smiling at the boys.
"Good morning." Wilbur said, "how'd you all sleep?"
"Those air mattresses suck." Tubbo groaned as he sat at the table.
Wilbur chuckled, "sorry, but we didn't have enough time or energy to bring down the spare mattresses from the attic."
Ranboo sat down at the table, his nightmare replaying in his mind. He used to have dreams like that when he first went to live with Phil. In fact, that was one of the reasons Phil took him in. No one had ever seen the man in the mask before, yet Ranboo used to see him in his dreams every night.
"Are you alright Ranboo?" Wilbur asked, setting a plate of pancakes in front of the boy.
Ranboo jumped lightly, "oh, y-yeah... I'm fine. Just had a nightmare last night."
Wilbur hummed and nodded, "alright. Take it easy this morning."
"The house looks much better than last night." Tubbo said, digging in to his pancakes.
Wilbur sighed, "unfortunately some of the pictures need replacement frames, and there's still the couch and the walls to fix. And the window."
"Luckily it's summer." Tommy smirked.
"True, but it still needs to be fixed." Wilbur rolled his eyes, "and you can help by running to the store after breakfast to pick up frames and paint."
Tommy groaned, "why me!?"
"Because." Wilbur said, "I'll give you some extra to buy more coke."
"Fine!" Tommy sighed, "you coming with Tubbo?"
The shorter boy shrugged, "sure."
"Ranboo?" Tommy asked.
"I actually want to talk with Ranboo while you're out, if that's alright." Wilbur said.
Ranboo nodded, "uh, yeah. That's fine."
Wilbur nodded, giving the boy a smile, "thank you. When you two are done, you can go to the store."
Tommy sighed heavily, but shoved another bite of pancake into his mouth regardless. Ranboo slowly ate. What did Wilbur want to talk to him about? Did he do something wrong?
"Alright!" Tommy grinned, his hand on the doorknob, "we'll be back in a few!"
Wilbur laughed, "alright! Stay safe!"
Ranboo glanced down at his half finished pancakes. He didn't have much of an appetite between his nightmare and Wilbur wanting to talk. The boy set his fork down, folding his hands in his lap.
Wilbur sat next to him. He didn't say anything for a minute or two. The silence was tense, but not particularly uncomfortable.
Wilbur sighed softly, "you had a nightmare last night?"
Ranboo nodded.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Wilbur asked.
Ranboo shook his head, "no..."
Wilbur sighed and sat back, "Tommy used to get nightmares too."
"Really?" Ranboo looked up.
Wilbur nodded, "Tommy is my little brother. Our parents dumped us on the doorstep of an orphanage when Tommy was a few months old. I had just barely turned eight. Lots of people wanted to adopt me, but not Tommy. Apparently he was too difficult. I refused to let us be separated, which got me into a lot of trouble... but it was worth it. The people at the orphanage were abusive to say the least, I wasn't going to let Tommy deal with that alone. So when I turned eighteen I took Tommy. We lived on the streets for a few months, I worked two jobs and saved up for a cheap apartment. Then as I was playing guitar in the park one day, some people came up to me and asked if I wanted to be in their band. I said yes. We started putting out music and eventually I was able to be in the band full time and afford this house."
Wilbur smiled softly, "But every so often, Tommy would have nightmares of the orphanage. It's been about seven years, but sometimes I still catch him sitting outside in the middle of the night. I give him space. He comes to me in the morning and tells me about it. I always listen. So, what was your nightmare about?"
Ranboo sighed, twisting his fingers in his hands, "I-I was running from the Masks, I couldn't run fast enough. Smilers cornered me between them and the Masks. I-I couldn't escape and then h-he started w-walking toward me-"
"Who started walking towards you?" Wilbur asked.
"The Green God." Ranboo whimpered.
