Emma
"Hey buddy," greeted the bus driver who took a drink of his usual Diet Pepsi that came from the vending machine that our school offered. "Looks like you made it just in time for once."
"Booyah," was Jeremy's reply as they fist pumped each other.
And to nobody's shock, he spotted an available seat next to me. As if anything different should be expected. With the attention of my vision previously on the outside world, my eyes provided Jeremy with a welcome as my headphones came off. The moment his body sat next to mine; my nose smelled the delight of his skin as my heart made a few quick beats. The boy knew how to wear cologne. My skin melted. If only this moment could last forever.
"What's up?" he asked. "What are you listening to?" The loud noise from my headphones was still apparent. His backpack fell to the floor.
"A little bit of Selena. You know, the usual."
"Sounds like 'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.' Am I right?" Those lips of his smiled as he tried not to laugh.
"You know you like Selena. Remember that concert we went to?" Who could forget that concert? It was an amazing day.
"Happy Thirteenth Birthday Emma!" exclaimed Jeremy as he picked me up and we began riding to school on his bike.
No time was wasted in handing me a cupcake with a picture of Selena Quintanilla printed on it. My heart melted at the cupcake. At that moment, my lips desperately wanted to give Jeremy a kiss on the cheek. All I wanted to do was sing a song from Selena. 'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom' it was. The two of us sang this until we got to school. The cupcake had yet to be eaten. But once we got there, it was devoured in seconds.
"Hey, guess what?" he stated. "I got you something special." Out of his pockets were two tickets. "I saved up some money and got the two of us tickets to go see Selena at the Houston Astrodome at the end of February. She's starting her crossover tour. Still need to find someone to take us though. We'll probably have to miss school for a few days."
The sight of these tickets had me screaming like a crazy little girl. My body couldn't help but jump up and down. At that moment, Jeremy was literally the most amazing person on the planet. Tears uncontrollably began leaving my eyes. This was followed by a hug. At that moment, the boy's body was pure gold. He was a god that had awoken a goddess. Something like that at least. I don't know.
"I've always wanted to see Selena in concert," my voice joyfully cried. "You are seriously the man Jeremy."
My best buddy couldn't help but snicker. "And you're the woman."
"Yeah, I guess that was a pretty fun concert." He stated looking directly in front of him. "My cousin was pretty nice in taking us. Speaking of music, I'm planning on getting the new Blink 182 Album after school." A quick silence grew between us as I didn't really care about the new Blink 182 Album.
"Do you have our presentation ready for speech class?" the boy asked as he quickly began taking some papers out of his backpack as my hands reached for what was in my pocket.
"Yeah, I got the '64 Shelby Daytona Hot Wheel with me." Along with the toy also came a picture. "I also have the picture of the race car that we've been working on the last ten years."
"Alright, that's dope." The papers from the backpack were handed over to me. "Finished typing up the report last night. I honestly can't believe Mr. Hymn let us type up our reports. I seriously can't tell you how tired I am of using pencils."
"Am I reading this first page?" My brain could care less about what Jeremy had stated. The first page seemed different compared to the rough draft we had written, but it did talk about where the idea to fix up our old Chevy came from. It was from my Hot Wheel."
"Yeah, sorry. Hope you don't mind. I ended up making a few adjustments to the first page."
Something about the changes to what I had written bothered me, but my heart couldn't tell that to Jeremy. It felt like he had erased a special memory. Nowhere on the first page was it mentioned that my daddy was the one that sparked my interest in cars. That whole memory was gone and nobody would ever know the truth. Why was Jeremy trying to hide the truth? Whatever. It was what it was.
"So, I guess you brought the picture and toy for our presentation. Looks like we're ready for our speech this morning. I honestly wish that Mr. Hymn could've let us discuss our futures and not about the past. Who honestly cares about the past?"
What did he just say? My stomach began hurting knowing that my own best friend didn't care about Mr. Hymn's project. "But you understand why Hymn is making us do this, right?" I stated hoping to change that mind of his. "We're seniors about to graduate. He wants us to remember something special from our past that highlights our time growing up. Before we know it, we're going to be out in the real world."
"Yes, Emma I get it." A great sigh left his voice while looking at the picture. "I'm just saying that I wish I didn't have to think about the past twice. It was hard enough thinking about the Senior Time Capsule and what I was going to put in it."
"What are you going to put in it?" My curiosity was sparked. Had he put anything thought into that time capsule? Goodness knows I did.
"I thought about putting one of my old CD albums into the capsule, but I'm not sure." Once I handed the speech back to him, everything went in the backpack and it was zipped up. "But I guess I can worry about that in a couple of days. We have until the end of the week anyways."
"Yeah, I guess so. I mean the whole thing goes down the day before prom."
Yes, I desperately wanted to show Jeremy what I had selected to put in the time capsule, but my mind told me not to do so. He'd likely insult me or something. Instead, he sat there drumming those knees of his while I pulled something out of my backpack. It was a mixtape. A special mixtape. And I was likely the only one who cared. Maybe it wouldn't mean much in about ten years. Heck, maybe it wouldn't mean anything in twenty years from now.
After a few minutes, the bus made it to school. Finally! Was I ever ready to get off this yellow piece of junk? Something told me Jeremy was willing to stay in a few extra minutes based on what was happening outside.
