Jeremy
Crap, why was the music player going off again? For a moment, I thought that I could play it cool and act like nothing was happening even though my face had made a sudden surprised look. Somehow, the conversation had to take a new direction. But how?
"What's that noise in your pocket?" she asked.
Nope, guess this couldn't be ignored. But it had to be ignored. If my dad and Melissa weren't allowed to know about this music device, neither was Emma. This was going to be hard to pull off
"What noise?" For some reason, eye contact was lost. The ground had my sight's attention. "I don't hear anything. Maybe it's the alcohol getting to you." Yeah, doubt she would buy that.
"The only thing I drank tonight was this lemonade. It's not the alcohol. There's definitely noise in your pocket."
How would Emma react if I showed her this music player? Maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. She was a friend. Friends can be trusted. We always trusted each other. Taking a deep breath and checking my surroundings to make sure nobody was watching us; the music player was pulled out of my pocket with a very shaky hand holding it.
"Alright," my voice quietly began speaking. "When I went to the music store today, this thing fell from the sky. It appears to be some sort of music player filled with songs I'm pretty sure neither of us has heard before."
Being somewhat irritated with the song, it was put on pause and I entered the password so there could be full access. The device was handed off to Emma who appeared puzzled by this crazy new thing. While studying the device, it became obvious that there were a lot of questions forming in that brain of hers.
"How did all these songs get in here? I don't see anywhere for the tape or the CD. And what the heck is Smallville? Isn't that the town Superman grew up in?"
"Yeah, I'm not sure how all of those songs got in there." A moment to think was taken. "It's almost as if this thing is from the future."
"Wouldn't that be something?" Her fingers were still playing with the object. "Seems like you did have quite a day. Finding a mysterious music device and getting saved by a stranger from Hailey? And I thought my day was crazy."
Not a moment too soon a ding went off on the device. And just like that, Emma's eyes lit up as if she had seen a ghost."
"Um, Jeremy, you might want to take a look at this." With that, the music player was handed back to me.
"Oh crap," I stated. My heart began beating a million times per second. It was some sort of pop-up from something called Facebook stating that I had memories to look at today with Jeremy Phillips and Hailey Phillips. What did that even mean? With the shakiest thumb in the world, the pop-up was pressed on. Within a matter of a short few seconds, my own eyes were looking at a picture. It was so crazy that my grip almost dropped it. Thankfully, Emma came to the rescue and held on to it. We both stood right next to each other to take a look at a picture.
"Oh, crap indeed," Emma responded. "What the heck is this?"
The picture in front of us was of me getting married to Hailey. We were at the altar with some random priest holding up his Bible into the air. The two of us held hands and held them up in the air. Our marriage rings were clear and visible. Under the photo was a caption from someone named Lisa M with a cartoon picture as a profile picture. And I couldn't help but read the caption out loud.
"Happy anniversary to the best couple of all time. You guys are the best. Wish you were my parents."
"What is this thing?" shouted Emma who took the music player away from me. If you could still call it a music player. This clearly wasn't a music player. It was something more. "You end up marrying Hailey? The girl was close to hyperventilating. What was I supposed to do?
"Dude, calm down." We don't actually know if this is true or not. Maybe it's a prank or something." We both knew that this wasn't a prank. With every effort, an attempt to take away this mysterious object was made.
"What do you mean calm down?" My attempt was unsuccessful. "Dude, do you not realize that there is a picture of you and Hailey married on this device? How can you expect me to calm down? What the freak is this thing?"
And just like that, the screen went blank making Emma go crazier. The object came back into my reach.
"I think the battery went out." For a good moment, my body just stood there thinking. "Wonder if there's some sort of charger or another battery?" For the time being, I didn't care that the battery went out. I was going to marry Hailey. My lips did everything they could not to smile.
Emma took a moment to breathe and found a seat. Little did she likely expect that she would end up in tears. This was all too weird. What was I supposed to do? Putting whatever this thing was in my pocket, another glass of lemonade was poured. With a chair next to my good friend, a seat was taken. An offer for more lemonade was given and it was taken. The crying began to die down and she was able to say something.
"You know that's not a music player, right? Whatever that thing is, it's from the future, and for some reason, you found it. You and Hailey get married. It's like..." There was a fumble for words. "It's like you're getting everything you've ever wanted."
Dang, she had a valid point. Out of all the potential people, this device came to me. And now it's showing me that I'm going to marry Hailey. Why? Why would it show me that? Why was I the one to find this thing? But how was this going to happen? What led to all of this? What if I didn't do something right? What if I screwed up somehow?
"Maybe we can just forget about it," my own words stated after a long quiet moment. "It needs a new battery anyway. And it's not like we're going to be able to find one for this thing."
There was no response except a sip of the lemonade.
"Hey, there you are!" shouted Hector out of nowhere in glee. "I've been looking for you guys. Come on, a few of us are getting together to play a little something with Hailey and her friends. Melissa is already there. Follow me."
I'm sure Emma was going to love this. Sure enough, we followed Hector to wherever he was leading us.
