All the air seemed to leave Alaina's body. She could barley breath. This boy the one she had known for only a few weeks, was telling her he loved her. He was the guy of her dreams. He was sweet, shy, caring, smart, strong and he loved her. The crazy, stubborn servant.
Alex stood in front of Alaina staring into her eyes. He was looking at her as if he was ready to be rejected, to be cast aside or even hit. It hurt Alaina to think that she could be the cause of any pain in the boy.
"I love you too." She whispered.
The light returned to Alex's eyes. He took the spoon from Alaina's shaking hands and set it on the counter. He looked back up at her smiling.
"I was worried you hated my guts." He admitted chuckling slightly.
"How could I?" Alaina replied.
Alex glanced down at Alaina's lips before returning his gaze to her eyes. She began to lean forward as if on auto pilot. Their faces were inches apart, Alaina began to close her eyes.
"Alexander?" Said a voice "Sir?"
Alaina and Alex jumped away from each other, looking around the room for the source of the voice.
"Sir?" Said a small intercom on the wall.
"Damn it." Alex said walking over to the intercom. "Yes." He replied pushing a small button.
"Your father requests your presence sir." The speaker answered.
"Thanks." Alex sounded annoyed. "Anything else?"
"He said it was private, to come alone." The speaker told him. "It-it's about the girl."
Alaina sat up straight and looked at Alex. He looked just as shocked, looking at Alaina. A million things went through Alaina's mind. She could tell Alex was thinking all the same things.
"Sir?" The speaker sounded again.
"Yes, alright, fine." Alex answered quickly. Turning off the intercom.
Alaina began to breath heavily. This was it, it was all over. She was going to loose everything. Everything she had barley began to take hold of.
She jumped off the counter, and swayed. It was all over. She gripped the counter for support. Alex crossed the room and stopped at Alaina's side. He took her by the shoulders and faced her towards him.
"Alaina?" He said "Are you alright? You're very pale."
Alaina shook her head and let the tears fall. Alex scooped Alaina up in his arms and took her out into the living room. There he sat on his bed, placing Alaina in his lap. She leaned into him crying her eyes out. All her fear coming into the open.
"Th-they are gunna k-kill m-me!" Alaina sobbed quietly into Alex's neck.
"No, no." Alex assured her. "They won't kill you. I promised you I would protect you remember?"
"No, Alex, y-you don't understand." Alaina whispered.
"Then explain." Alex said.
"I'm not who you think I am." She explained "I'm not a servant, I'm part of the rebellion. I was sent here to get information. I never thought I'd meet someone as perfect as you. I knew it would only be a short amount of time before they put it together that I was a spy. Alex, I'm so sorry."
Alex had gone stiff all over. Alaina looked up at him, tears still falling from her face. He wasn't looking at her, he was staring at the wall.
"Alex?" She squeaked getting scared.
"You are part of the rebellion?" Alex croaked "Against the my father, the Emperor?"
Alaina gasped. "The Emperor is your father?"
Alex nodded. He looked down at Alaina, and set her on the bed beside him. Alaina reached out to him, but he stood up suddenly. He turned and looked at Alaina hurt in his eyes.
"Did you use me?" He asked.
"What?" Alaina replied.
"Did you use me?" Alex repeated.
"No. I never would."
"How can I be sure?"
"Alex," Alaina stood up from the bed and went towards Alex. "I love you, I didn't know you were the Emperor's son. I swear, Alex, I never ever used you."
"That's hard to believe." Alex told her looking into her eyes.
"What?" Alaina breathed.
"You heard me, especially sense you couldn't tell me before I told you to stay in my room." Alex said coldly.
"I couldn't tell you, Alex." Alaina tried to explain "You would have been in danger."
"And now it's safe?" He demanded. "Now I'm safe even though I have to go talk to my father now. Now that I have to go a protect you from him even though I know what you are."
"Alex," Alaina's voice shook. "Please."
"Leave." He whispered.
"What?"
"You heard me, leave."
Tears formed in Alaina's eyes again. She reached out to touch Alex's shoulder but he moved away again. He grabbed a shirt from the end of his bed, and threw it on.
"Alex-"
"I told you I would protect you, this is me protecting you." Alex demanded. "We are over, goodbye."
With that, Alex went out the door, slamming it behind him. Alaina jumped, then fell to the ground tears falling again.
'How could he do this to me?' Alaina asked herself.
If only she had known, that Alex sat on the other side of the door, full of the same sorrow.
"I had to do it." He said allowed. "I had to protect her, even if it meant loosing her."
Alex stood and looked back at the door, it looked like a wall between what he wanted and where he was. He placed a hand on the wooden frame.
"I love you." Alex whispers to the girl on the other side "I'm sorry."
Then he turned and walked down the long hallway to stall, to give Alaina time.
