She was running through the woods. The trees seemed to be going on forever. They felt like they were getting thicker. She continued to run, she had to get there in time. She couldn't let the enemy get the two of them. She had to protect them.

A tree root seem to spring from the earth in front of her. She tripped over the root and hit the ground. She was sobbing. Tears making streams on her cheeks. This couldn't be real, couldn't be happening. They had promised. They told her by the lake at sunset.

She had waited for an hour after sun set. She then realized she had been set up. She was then running through the trees. Screaming their names, trying to find them.

This couldn't happen. She had to find them. Nothing could happen to them. She couldn't let them be hurt on her behalf. Not them too. She picked herself off the rough ground and began to run again.

She came to a clearing lit with touches. She saw a group of people in white robes standing in a large circle around something. She saw one of the people in the robes step into the circle, raising a gleaming knife.

'No!' She screamed in her head. 'No!'

She rushed towards the circle of white, but they seemed to be getting farther away. When she finally reached them, she pushed the people aside.

"I'm here." She wailed "I'm here!"

"You're too late." The leader of the white robes said from under his hood.

She couldn't see his face, but she could feel him smirking. The man moved to the side revealing their bodies. She rushed forward, collapsing between them. She reached towards the smaller figure. She touched the girls small face.

"Cathy." She sobbed. "No."

She then turned to the taller figure. She reached over and brushed his dark hair out of his face.

"Alex." She cried "Please, no! Alex! Come back! I need you!"

Alaina shot up in bed. The walls of the room unfamiliar to her. She was breathing heavily in a large king size bed. Her legs were under soft silk blankets.

She was still in the simple nightgown she had changed into when she had come back from the party with Alex. Her hair was plastered to her forehead with cold sweat.

Alaina pulled the covers away from her and put her small feet onto the cold hard wood floor. She walked across the room and looked into the mirror of her new vanity. Her hair was slightly tangled, noting running her fingers through wouldn't fix, and her nightgown was twisted around the top.

She fixed her nightgown and left the small room, into the main room. Alex slept soundlessly in his large bed. Alaina smiled and went over to the small kitchen that was located in another small room off the main one. She clicked on the light and found a cup. She quietly turned on the water and filled the glass.

She took a small drink of the cold water and went over to the fridge. She opened the door and stared at the contents inside. After a few seconds she shut the door and turned to go back to her room an apple in her hand.

She took a bite and looked up towards the door. She gasped and dropped the apple letting it roll across the floor where Alex bent down and picked it up. He smiled at her then tossed the apple into the trash can.

"After all that food you ate, you are still hungry?" Alex laughed.

"Couldn't sleep." Alaina explained.

"Same here." Alex admitted.

"Really?" Alaina asked.

"No." Alex admitted again "but you did wake me up by turning on the light. It shines right into my eyes you know."

Alaina smiled a small smile and shrugged. "Sorry."

Alex shrugged then looked at Alaina's face. "Are you ok?" He asked her.

"I just had a nightmare." Alaina replied.

Alex nodded his head. "Need to talk about it?" He said.

Alaina shook her head. "No, just need to shake it off."

Alex nodded and walked Alaina back to her room. "If you need me, I'll be out here." He tells her before she shuts the door.

She was in a cold cell. A single window letting light in. She stood up and went to the window looking outside. The snow had swallowed half the window so she could barley see the frozen lake and broken trees.

The door behind her opens and a girl comes into her cell. She has red hair, like her mother and dark eyes like her father. The other girl had a basket in her freckled hands.

"Brought you breakfast." The girl says.

Alaina smiles and hugs the girl, then sits down beside her. The two begin to eat the food. They chat and laugh together. When the food is finished, they take turns doing each other's hair.

The girl suddenly turns to her. "You have to get out of here." She says. "Promise me you will."

"I promise." Alaina says in reply.

The girl then goes into a fit of coughs. The girl falls over, her lips turning blue. Alaina calls for help but no one responds. She has no choice but to sit there and watch the life drain form her friend's eyes.

Alaina wakes up crying. After a few minutes she calms herself down, and walks out of her room. She thinks about going to the kitchen again but she doesn't want to wake Alex again. Alaina decides to go the the bathroom and wash her face instead. As she walks past, Alex rolls over and starts to talk in his sleep.

"No, no, stop." He mutters.

'So he was having nightmares.' Alaina thinks to herself.

She quietly walks over to Alex's bed and pulls back the covers closest to her. Alex squirms slightly but doesn't wake up. She slides under the covers next to him and looks at him.

When he was asleep he looked more like a child. He had a certain no worries look to him. With out thinking Alaina reached out and moved a strand of hair out of his eyes, allowing her hand to rest on his cheek.

Alex stirs slightly once more. He reaches up and holds Alaina's hand. His eyes opened very slightly. He smiled sleepily at her.

"Look, Raven." He mutters. "I know you're a bird, but that doesn't mean you have to be an early bird."

Alaina smiled back at him. "I couldn't sleep." She whispered back. "And by the sound of it, neither can you."

"Just a nightmare." Alex whispered back, drifting back into sleep. "Nothing too bad."

Alaina smiled. She could tell Alex had fallen back to sleep. She removed her hand from Alex's cheek and started to move the blankets. Alex then reached out and grabbed her hand.

"You don't have to go." He muttered.

Alaina smiled and laid back down beside him. "Ok" she said tapping his nose before turning over.

She felt Alex move closer to her and drape his arm over her waist.

"Alex." She whispered. After she got no response she guessed he was a sleep. With a shrug she closed her eyes and fell into the first peaceful sleep she had had in weeks.
