Still

When the light bounces off the linoleum

I will stay very still

And hope that he doesn't wake

Because then he will go.

As the sheets of my bed

Grow warm in the sun

He will wake from a nightmare

To mine that's already begun.

While he goes for a smoke

I will put on my clothes

And he wont say a word

But I'm beginning to choke.

When he laces his shoes

I will beg him to stay

I do so in whispers

And I'm not surprised when he bats me away.

As I sit by the sink

Watching dust dance in the mirror

I know he'll be back

But in a terrible state.

When the light finally fades

And he stumbles in

In a poorly concealed cloak of

Cannabis and gin.

And I cant bear to leave him

Because I don't want to be alone

But slowly we suffocate each other

There's no good way this can end.

When the light bounces off the linoleum

I will stay very still

And pray that when he does wake

This time he won't go.
