The walk back home was tense between Y/N and Bucky. The super soldier squeezed her hand in his, and they both exchanged a small nervous smile.
Aaron and Mara were oblivious to their worried and anxious parents as they discussed their powers between themselves.
Y/N changed into her casual clothes as she stepped into the threshold of the house.
Bucky and Y/N ushered their children to their room and tucked them into bed.
"Kids, your mother and I—" Bucky started and caught Y/N's eyes from where she was next to Aaron on the bed. She looked like she was barely able to hold herself together the moment they locked eyes. Utterly devastated.
"—Are very proud of you," Bucky finished, ruffling Mara's hair.
Y/N cracked a weak smile at his words, "You know, a family is forever," Y/N kissed Aaron's head and walked over to Mara's bed, switching places with Bucky, "We could never truly leave each other, even if we tried. You know that, right?"
Mara nodded, smiling in such a way that the corner of her eyes crinkled.
Y/N would not see that shade of blue ever again. Not from Bucky. Not from Mara.
As Mara snuggled back into bed, Y/N and Bucky walked over to the door to stand together.
"Aaron, Mara," Bucky called, wrapping his hands around Y/N from the back, "After what I've done in the past," he referred to the days he spent as the Winter Soldier that Shuri had told him about. The kids weren't aware of it, but Y/N was, which caused her to stiffen ever so lightly. "I don't think I deserve all this but," he smiled at them, "Thank you, for giving me the opportunity to be your Dad."
"Mom, Dad," Aaron called his parents, making them turn to him, "Thanks for," he paused with a smile, "Choosing me to be your son,"
Y/N was finding it difficult to hold back her tears, her heart wrenched agonizingly, "I love you guys so much," she cleared her throat when her voice wavered, "You know that, right?"
"I love you too, mom," Mara and Aaron beamed together, unknown to the growing ache in her heart.
"And," Bucky pressed a loving kiss to his wife's temple, "I love you too, doll," he murmured into her hair.
"Now go to sleep, both of you,"
Mara was curious and worried as to what had made her parents look so heartbroken and tapped into their minds for a second. She immediately regretted it when she saw their collective demise, in which only her mother will survive.
After the door of the room closed, she listened to the decreasing footsteps of her parents down the stairs and quickly jolted out of her bed when she was sure that they were out of earshot. She walked over to her brother's bed across the room. "Psst! Aaron?" she whispered, "Aaron?" she prodded his back with her finger.
