The Benefactor 22
"Olivia!"
"What do you want from me?" I screamed, chasing my own shadow down the dark corridors of the empty academy, "Leave me alone!"
"Olivia, come back!"
I breathed heavily, panting every second of running past the dead silent classrooms until I came to William's office. My fingers felt the door's icy, cold handle with a bubble of anxiety building up in my tense throat, and I squeezed my eyes shut when the door swung open.
Too afraid to look, I tried so hard to keep my curious eyes away from his office and away from him- if he was in there. But the curiosity was too much for me to bear, and I blinked until William's bloody body fazed into reality.
"No, no!" I shouted at the limp body, hoping that I'd wake up like all of my worst nightmares, "William, wake up!"
I shook his arm until he moved his leg and then his chest. Finally, he breathed, his chest slowly shifting up and down, but I hesitated on seeing his face. Since a rugged blanket covered his face, I reluctantly ripped it off to expose what seemed to be a stranger's face.
Not William.
William's face didn't look anything like that.
Instead of Will's familiar and comforting face, I gaped at the pale, blank expressional face dripping with streams of blood down his face, and I tried not to run away from where I was. The voice following me might be near, and I hated to be caught by it, no matter what I had to endure.
"Shane."
"What!?" I jerked my head around to the voice, "What about Shane?"
"Mason."
"I don't understand!" I shouted again, screaming to a faceless voice, "What the hell do you want from me?"
"William."
"Stop telling me names!" I jumped to my feet, sprinting in the opposite direction and chasing an unknown destination, "Leave me alone!"
"One will die."
That time, I tripped over myself, stumbling to the ground, and I let out a groan of frustration, "Shane! Shane! Let it be Shane!"
I assume the voice ignored my plea, as it went on repeating the same names, in the same order.
"Shane."
"Mason."
"William."
It never ended, and I found myself slapping my hands over my ears to block out the noise. But the voice was inside my head, forcing me to listen to it no matter what, and I couldn't take it any longer. The pain overwhelmed my body as the names were being written into my skin and on my nails, everywhere. Even the walls crumbled to form their names with the brick.
"Olivia."
For once, someone else said something, and my name, in fact.
I barely believed it.
"Olivia?" It repeated, "Olivia, are you okay?"
"What!?" I flung up, only to hit my head on someone's knee, "Damn it." I rubbed my head, feeling relieved for some odd reason.
"Why were you sleeping on the floor?"
I finally saw Mason glaring down at me, holding out his hand for me to grab, but I waited a second, wanting some proof that this was reality, not a nightmare.
