The Benefactor 24
"Where were you last night?" Evelyn hissed in my ear as we got breakfast.
"Uh, nowhere," I lied, biting my tongue to prevent myself from gushing what I wanted to tell her about, "Uh, library?"
"All night?" She wasn't buying any of my lies.
"All nighters," I shrugged, hoping that I had a project I had for class, "I do it all the time."
"Really?" She furrowed her brow, "That's interesting...And by the way, the library closes at eight." She gave me a sly look, navigating her way to the table with Travis and Mason.
I took a deep breath, preparing myself for what kind of harassment Mason would cause me, and I forced my legs to waltz casually over to the table with plenty of poise and rationality. Even though Mason and Travis were my worst enemies, I had to play dumb while in school.
"Morning, Liv," Travis smirked, ripping off a piece of his croissant, "Haven't seen you around lately."
"Nope," I agreed mindlessly, sipping some coffee, "So what have I missed?"
"Nothing really," Evelyn butted in, obviously knowing why I had an annoyed tone to my voice, "Just that there's, uh." She stopped mid-sentence, glancing behind her shoulder at some guy, "New student?"
My eyes widened as I peeked to where she had just looked, hoping not to see a familiar face, but I did. Knoll was sitting all alone with his laptop close to him, nearly at the edge of the table. And the fact that he had his back to the wall, I knew he must have been hiding something. Something that could easily help me with the prophecy.
"Knoll?" I scoffed, trailing back to reality, "Uh, that's his name, right?"
"Yup," Mason commented with his mouth full, "He's Shane's half brother."
"Damn," I said under my breath, saying the next part to the entire group, "So does he have any classes with any of us?"
"No," Evelyn shook her head, speaking quieter than usual, "But he does have French..."
"Uh, oh," I uttered uneasily, "W-what period?"
"When you have German, so it's fine," She assured me, clueless to what Mr. Knight had told me earlier.
"Um, not exactly," I mumbled, shoving a granola bar into my mouth, "Mr. Knight just switched me to that class..."
"You've got to be kidding me," She let out an aggravated sigh, "What a jerk."
"He's not a jerk!" I yelped defensively, cooling down after a second of thinking, "He's my benefactor..."
"Uh, huh," She muttered to me, nodding her head sarcastically.
I knew exactly what she meant by that, but with all of the eyes glancing over at me, my hands were tied and unable to prevent her from saying anything more than what she was already suggesting. But with the lack of brains at our table, my nerves relieved themselves a little, enough for me to eat in peace…Besides the fact that I’d be in a class, if not more, with Knoll. The guy that had attempted to murder me, the guy who nearly blackmailed Mr. Knight and me…
No, this was not going to be a fun year, especially for senior year. So, now, I was back to square one, confused on why exactly my life had chosen to be so difficult to understand and handle. I suppose I’d figure that out on my way to class. If not, then whenever I got to chemistry and snuck into the supply closet early.
