Chapter 18

William's POV

I watched as she raced from my office in a tizzy, completely ignorant to how much I loved her, but I knew Arthur would know if I went after her. It was too risky to the prophecy just to give up now, and the only way I could ever be with her was to lead her to fulfilling the prophecy. It hurt enough for me to want to give up everything, but the secret that kept us apart held strong unless I found a way for her to release Arthur from Avalon.

I fiddled with a stapler, stapling random documents together and ripping them apart only to staple them back. In the midst of my fidgeting state, I picked up an envelope addressed to me from an anonymous source. Arthur, of course. I knew him well enough to tell when he sent me mysterious letters by manipulating students here.

I cut the envelope open with a letter opener and unfolded the old, decrepit parchment to see exaggerated cursive writing all over the page. I hesitated before succumbing to reading it, not because it might have information on Olivia's whereabouts but that I might be closer to exposing my secret to her. I had to admit it to her soon, otherwise I'd be without her.

William,

I know it is difficult for you to watch the love of your life walk away and to another man, but it is the only thing that will help fulfill the prophecy before Mordred's followers get a hold of the Key to Avalon. It is only a matter of time before Olivia will come back to you, but let her go for now. Shutting down the school for a week or more could make her disappearance a little less obvious, and try to make yourself busy. Trust me, it will help you pass the time.

             Arthur

I blinked at the page. What exactly did he mean by Olivia running to another guy? Mason? Not Shane-- if he really did die in that fire, but if he lived... And the one thing he wanted to tell her? What if it was that he was falling in love with her? No! I'd never happen, because I loved her more. She knew that deep down in her soul. I knew she knew.

I heard a soft knock on the door, and I summoned whoever to come in. I saw Evelyn's perky self peep through the door and say hello before making herself comfortable in the chair Olivia had made her own. She crossed her legs gently underneath my desk and smiled at me, worried though.

"What's wrong, Evelyn?" I leaned my elbows on my desk, "Is it about Olivia?"

She gasped silently, "How'd you know, Mr. Knight?"

I shook my head, glancing down at the letter, "She stormed out just a little while ago. You don't happen to know where she is, do you?"

Evelyn peered back at the door, and I slipped the letter and the empty envelope into a drawer. She pushed the bangs out of her pale face, "No, that's why I came to you. I'm worried about her. You see, she's been quite out of it ever since her dinner with Mason..."

She trailed off into nothing, and I heard her swallow her words before she spoke them to me. She held her breath and sat up, staring down at her lap-- or maybe something in her lap. I forgot whether she brought anything with her or if she sneaked it in without me knowing.

I stretched my neck over the wooden desk to see if she held anything obvious in her lap, and I saw her thin fingers wrapped tightly around an old, rusty key. It wasn't just any key, though; it held the secrets of Avalon and protected the world from Mordred's return. It also trapped Arthur in Avalon, for all these years. For all these years, it kept me from fulfilling the prophecy or being given hints to find the chosen one to do it themselves.
