IMAGINE BEING A WOMAN AND IN LOVE WITH JASMINE, BUT KNOWING YOU CAN'T HAVE HER BECAUSE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WOULDN'T BE ACCEPTED IN AGRABAH.

Warnings: angst, homophobia

It wasn't easy being a woman in Agrabah and loving another woman. It was considered a sin, an act from a freak show, something to laugh at. An insult to all the other people and to the Sultanate's reputation. And especially when you were in love with the princess. And to make matters worse, the princess loved you back.

Jasmine was expected to marry a prince. A man, someone who could "protect" her. Because "women can't protect themselves" and they needed someone - a man - to take care of them. It was Jasmine's greatest dream to be a sultan one day - but it couldn't happen either because again, she was a woman. Jafar always told her to learn her place and you wanted to push him over the balcony every time he whispered those venomous words to Jasmine's ear.

You both knew that even if Jasmine was going to be a sultan, she still couldn't marry you or love you publicly - no one would follow her if she was to marry you. Because even if she was a sultan, a woman loving a woman was still considered a sin.

When Prince Ali came to the scene, Jasmine fell in love with him - not so deeply as she had fallen in love with you, but she couldn't help it. If there would have been the tiniest drop of hope of you being able to marry each other, or love each other in public without being chased and persecuted - she would have taken it in a blink of an eye. There would be a time when that would be possible, but it was not going to be for a long, long time.

And that's why you had to move on from each other - and you wiped a tear away from your cheek as you picked up your bag and prepared to board a ship to another land far, far away from Agrabah. The journey cost more than you had earned in your whole life, but Jasmine had provided the money for you. You both knew that living close to each other was risking too much - and the only way to prevent anything from happening, was to make it nearly impossible that you would be able to ever return to Agrabah.

Jasmine was sitting on a windowsill in her room, watching your ship making its leave, and a lonely tear rolled down her cheek as well. She fought against the urge to run down and stop the ship, because she knew that you leaving Agrabah was for the best and you did it for her safety, but it still didn't make the thought of not seeing you ever again any better.

She watched your ship leave, and you stared at the palace as it became smaller and smaller - and both of your hearts lost a piece as you realized there was no going back.
