The Promise

A promise, a vow of dedication to fulfill something to someone. It was an interesting tradition that Raven found honorable. Seth however, was surely not one to think that way. Being a pirate, he had most likely given up most of his loyalty and honesty throughout the years. He had gone and made a life for himself based on thievery and deception.

Interesting enough though, when one made a promise to a pirate, it was not forgotten, or forgiven. No matter what.

When Raven woke up the next morning, surprise hit her first. She looked over to a lonely spot, with Seth nowhere in sight.

"Seth!" She called out with the slightest of panic.

Had he left at some point without telling her where he was going? Was he even well enough to walk!?

"Over here princess." His voice answered from nearby.

Raven gazed up, shocked to see him sitting over by the fire, staring into the flames thoughtfully.

"Are you alright? Can I...get you anything?" She asked.

Seth cast her an amused grin. His eyes were dark with fatigue, and his face pale with weakness, yet he sat there without any show of illness.

"I know you love to take care of me dearie, but I think it best to change how we do things around here. It would be best to start save us both some energy."

Raven frowned at his jest, but decided to ignore his little joke. After all, she was just happy he was alive and looking well.

"What do you mean?" She asked.

"I mean we should stop working during the day. The sun is too hot, maybe it was what made me sick. We would be better off hunting and cooking at night when it's cool and sleeping through the day. We'll just make sure to gather extra supplies to last through the next day too."

Raven was in absolute astonishment over such a simple revelation. Though she did wonder when he had found the time to figure out such an extensively unique plan.

"That is...brilliant..." She whispered.

Seth chuckled and cast her a mischievous grin.

"Thank you love. Although, you need not worry. We can still enjoy plenty of the moonlight hours together as well." He teased quietly.

Her face blushed bright red at his suggestive words and tone of voice.

"Do not say things like that!" She hissed with embarrassment.

"Why? You promised me you would do anything, remember?" He snickered.

Raven felt her breath catch in her chest, recalling the words she had indeed uttered.

"What, what are you suggesting I do?" She asked, thinking of her virtue.

Seth suddenly burst out in loud laughter at her expression of deep worry.

"Relax princess! Surely, if I wanted to behave as a complete scoundrel, I already would have. No, I have something a bit more dignified in mind." He answered.

Raven felt her heart sink to her stomach, realizing his intentions quite clearly now.

"You...you do not mean...matrimony do you?" She asked anxiously.

He cast her a wicked smile as he sipped on some freshly cooked water.

"Why should I die a bachelor when there is such an eligible young lady around to play my companion?"

Raven gasped with horrified shock.

"Well perhaps I do not intend to marry a pirate! You may have saved my life Seth, but you have also been there to destroy it. And if we were ever to be rescued I could be hanged on account of you!" She declared nervously.

Seth turned to her with a serious and expression.

"But I am not really a pirate anymore, am I? Here on this island, I am just a man. One who shall never escape, same as you."

She paused, stunned by his unusually solemn words. His logic, it was pretty convincing. They certainly were stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no one out looking for him or her. If they did not marry, the two of them would die out here alone, only to be forgotten by the world.

Still, could Raven truly trust him? If the opportunity presented itself might he hurt or abandon her? No, she supposed he would have done it already if so.

So then, was this their only option?

"If...if I agree to this, there would be stipulations. And I...would need some time..." She mumbled.

Seth's eyes bulged with momentary astonishment at her lack of resistance.

"What!? I do not wish to die a spinster either!" She snapped.

He chuckled, though it was a bit of a melancholy sound.

"Very well. Let us make it for one month from now, yes?" He said.

Raven gulped and stared deep into his sea green eyes, searching them for a long minute before her mind solidified.

"Very well, one month from now."
