The sound of the rushing traffic could be heard from the car as it drove down the busy city streets. Mothers with their children were walking in fast paces on the sidewalk, trying to reach the train station in time. They were going to send their children away to live with strangers far away from their homes and families. It was to protect them from the war that was happening.
Miriam Pierce was seated in the backseat of a Rolls Royce, staring blankly out the window as the car rolled closer to its destination. She was too busy trying to hold herself together, that she didn't hear a word of what her butler, Mr. Branson was saying. It wasn't until they came to a stop and Mr. Branson came to open her door, that she came out of her trans and looked up to meet his eyes. She was on the brink of crying, not because she was sad of leaving but because of what she had been through, what she had witnessed a few days earlier. Mr. Branson gave her a sympathetic look and reached out to take her hand.
"It's alright Ms. Pierce. It's alright to feel sad, but right now you need to be strong."
"It's hard, I can't get the picture out of my head. I miss them so much."
"So do I. But they wouldn't want you to bury yourself in grief. They would want you to live and remain the same strong and happy young woman they raised you to be."
"You somehow always know the right words to say that will make me feel better."
"That is what I do best, Ms. Pierce. Now, shall we?" Miriam smiled and took his hand and got out of the car. Two porters had come to assist with Miriam's luggage and together they all went inside the train station to find the train.
As they were walking down the crowded platform, people turned their heads and stared, which made Miriam uncomfortable.
"Mr. Branson?" Miriam whispered.
"Yes, Ms. Pierce?" Mr. Branson leaned down just enough so that no one would notice.
"Why is everyone staring?"
"I believe they know what happened to your parents, miss. But you can't let them affect you. Remember to always keep appearance, one bad photo and your uncle will have the upper hand."
