Right as Peter announced their arrival, the tent in front of them flapped in the breeze, making everyone around the camp kneel. Confusion spread across the children's faces but when they saw the great lion exit the tent, realization hit them, and they kneeled as well.
"Welcome, Peter, Son of Adam. Welcome, Susan, Lucy and Miriam, Daughters of Eve. And welcome to you, Beavers. You have my thanks." His voice was deep and rich, but somehow, he made them all feel safe and comfortable. Being in his presence wasn't as intimidating as they had first thought.
"But where is the fifth?" Aslan asked.
"He has tried to betray them and joined the White Witch, O Aslan." Miriam didn't like how Mr. Beaver just blurted things out. She wasn't entirely convinced that Edmund had betrayed them out of own free will. She didn't believe he was that wicked.
"That was partly my fault, Aslan. I was angry with him, and I think that helped him go wrong." Peter explained and Miriam laid a supporting hand on his shoulder which made Peter turn his head. Their eyes met for a brief moment before they turned to face Aslan again, but in that brief moment, Peter's heart skipped a beat and his feelings towards his newly found friend grew stronger.
Aslan said nothing either to excuse Peter or blame him, but merely stood looking at him with his great unchanging eyes. And it seemed to all of them that there was nothing to be said.
"Please, Aslan. Can anything be done to save Edmund?" Lucy asked.
"All shall be done. But it may be harder than you think." Aslan said before he was silent again for some time. Up to that moment Lucy had been thinking how royal and strong and peaceful his face looked. Now it suddenly came into her head that he looked sad as well. But next minute that expression was quite gone. The Lion shook his mane and clapped his paws together and spoke once more.
"Meanwhile, let the feast be prepared. Ladies, take these Daughters of Eve to their tent and minister to them." The girls followed a few dryads and naiads away from the crowd to a decent sized tent, it was red, and gold and Miriam sighed in contempt when she entered and saw that she no longer had to sleep on the bare ground. The entire tent was filled with soft cushions, and they would even have their own mattress with a soft blanket to keep them warm at night.
"There are new clothes for you, Your Highnesses. And if you like, there's a river nearby for you to wash yourself." One of the dryads told them. Her voice was soft and serene, it was like she was talking through a melody. Her voice came out like a song.
"Thank you, it's very kind of you." Miriam said and offered them a grateful smile.
The girls were left alone to settle in their new place. Lucy jumped into a pile of cushions and giggled as she relaxed a little. Both Miriam and Susan laughed at the younger girl then joined her on the floor.
"What do you ladies say? Should we go down to that river and clean up before the feast?" Miriam asked and they nodded in unison.
"What about Peter?" Lucy asked.
