Mr. Kirke was a very old man with shaggy white hair which grew over most of his face as well as on his head. He welcomed the children with open arms and even though he had scared Lucy at first, they all came to like him pretty fast. Miriam of course knew Mr. Kirke from before and had always found him likeable, a bit odd though but that's what she liked about him the most.

On the evening of their arrival, they said good night to the Professor and went upstairs to their respective rooms. The girls slept in one room and the boys slept in another. And after they all got dressed in their night clothes, the boys wandered into the girl's room to talk about their new house arrangement.

"I think we're gonna like it here. The Professor will surely let us do anything we like." Peter said as he sat down on Lucy's bed.

"I think he's sweet." Susan said as she got herself comfortable in her bed.

"Oh, come off it! Don't go on talking like that." Edmund said, who tried his best not to be tired even though he was exhausted. His effort however, only made him bad-tempered.

"Like what? And anyway, it's time you go to bed."

"Trying to talk like mother. And who are you to say when I'm to go to bed? Go to bed yourself."

"I think we should all go to bed." Miriam said as she hung up her robe on the coat rack before climbing into her own bed and braided her hair so it wouldn't get tangled during the night.

"Miriam is right. We should all go to bed. We can explorer this place tomorrow." Peter said, then tucked his little sister in before saying goodnight and leaving with his brother.

However, when morning came, it was pouring outside. The rain was so heavy, you couldn't even see the woods or the mountains that surrounded the estate. Miriam woke up before Lucy and Susan, so she carefully got out of bed, went to get her robe then sneaked out of the bedroom. It was quiet, a bit too quiet for Miriam's taste as the silence brought back all the horrible memories of hearing her parents screams of terror and seeing their dead bodies as she crawled out of her hiding place. She could feel the tears coming, so she walked to the only place she knew would give her comfort. She walked down the hallway in the direction of the library. She tried her best to be quiet as she didn't want to wake up the others. When she reached the library she breathed in the scent of old books, thinking it would calm her down but it didn't. She felt her heart beating faster and it got harder to breathe. She hurried to the back of the room, sunk down to the floor and leaned against a bookshelf as the tears fell down her cheeks. She buried her face in her hands and cried out in despair. It pained her to know that she was never going to see her parents again, she missed them terribly. Despite their wealth and their status, Miriam's parents had been the most generous and humbled people she knew. They had taught her kindness and compassion, to always help those in need and to never take anything for granted. Instead, be grateful for the life she had. She had learned to look for the small things instead of wishing for the bigger. To treat people with respect and never assume the worst before you have all the details. The security and love she got from her parents were something she was going to miss and knew she would never get back. Now she lived in limbo. Despite the people who worked for her family, who would always protect her, she felt alone. Her position was threatened, and she knew her days were marked. Her uncle would come for her, one way or the other.
