Peter searched for a long time before he located Miriam. She had walked into the nearby forest and were sitting on a bare rock close to the opening. Her head hung low, and it appeared as she was deep in thoughts. Peter approached her cautiously as not to startle her. However, as he came closer, he accidently stepped on a stick which exposed him, and Miriam quickly turned her head towards the sound.

"Go away, Peter."

"No, not until you hear me out."

"What for? What could you possibly have to say?" Miriam stood up from the rock and with a serious expression she folded her arms and stared at Peter.

"I'm sorry for what I said, I didn't mean it. I was just overwhelmed with everything and unfortunately, I took it out on you. Could you please forgive me?"

"You had no right talking about my life and my parents for that matter. You have no idea what my life is like."

"You are right, it was wrong of me to say those things. I know I hurt you and that was never my intention."

"Whether it was your intention or not, actions have consequences and I'm not ready to forgive you yet."

"What can I do to make it up to you?"

"Honestly, Peter. Just go back to your siblings and try mend whatever is left of your broken promise." Miriam didn't give Peter another chance to open his mouth. She walked past him back to the camp and straight to her tent.

Peter's words had cut like a knife to her heart and the pain was excruciating. Images of her dead parents flashed through her eyes. Their lifeless bodies on the stone floor, it was a memory she would never forget no matter how much she tried. The mere mention of them gave Miriam anxiety and she had to gasp for air. The world spun around her, she could feel how her head got heavier and she felt dizzy. She stumbled inside the tent and fell down on the pile of cushions and started to hyperventilate all while tears streamed down her cheeks.

She had no idea why Peter's words had triggered her as profoundly as it had. Perhaps she was simply surprised by him because ever since they had met, he had shown her kindness and compassion. Therefore, hearing him say those words so coldly changed her view of him. It might seem petty of her to not let something as trivial pass, but she had been taught that if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all. Although, in hindsight, she had not been fair to Peter either when she had told him off. No one was perfect, she knew that, not even her. However, her feelings were her own and she couldn't control them. Her parents and her situation were a sensitive topic that she honestly didn't want others to mark upon.

Sometime during her hyperventilating state, Miriam had passed out from exhaustion so when Lucy and Susan stepped inside, they were surprised to find her sound asleep. They had to shake her awake as no words could jolt her awake. She groggily gazed up at them and for a short moment she forgot where she was.
