With the battle won and Narnia finally freed from the White Witch, Aslan's army along with the children decided to stay in their camp for a day to rest and gather new strength. And Narnians reunite with those who had been turned to stone.
The children sat together inside the girls tent and talked about all the things they'd been through.
"I can't believe we just fought in a war, and we won." Edmund stated enthusiastically with a huge grin on his face.
"And here we thought we left home to get away from the war." Susan said.
"What do you think will happen now? Will Aslan rule Narnia?" Lucy asked them.
"I think we will, Luce. I mean, ever since we arrived everyone has been referring us as Kings and Queens. Surely they believe that we are staying." Edmund said.
"But we are supposed to go home, right? We did what was asked of us, we helped defeat the White Witch. Now we need to go home."
"I'm sure we'll get our answers soon enough." Miriam said as she combed through Lucy's hair that had been tangled from recent events.
"I have to ask, Miriam. How did you do it?" Edmund asked Miriam.
"Do what?" She was now braiding Lucy's hair but turned her head to face Edmund as he continued to speak.
"On the field. You fought like you hadn't done anything else. You were brutal, never once did it seem like you were afraid or second-guessed yourself."
"He's right. I saw it too. Something happened out there." Peter agreed with his brother. Miriam stayed silent, not knowing what to say. She didn't know what force had made her act in such a brutal way on the battlefield. She knew rage had been a factor as well as pain. Maybe even determination.
"I guess seeing the Narnians fight for their freedom and sacrificing themselves for the greater good made me realize there were much more at stake. That if we didn't win we would all die one way or another, either right there or later on. I didn't want to think about what would happen to us if we died in this world." The tent fell silent. It was a grim thought, death had never been a topic in the Pevensie household until their father went to war but even then it was never something they pondered on. For Miriam on the other hand, death followed her like a phantom in the dark. It was a constant reminder that life was fragile no matter your age and so she decided that she would enjoy the time she had left in Narnia, for she did not know when it would be over.
"But let's not dwell on what could have been. We won, we should be happy and celebrate." She continued with a smile.
"We should." Lucy agreed then hit Miriam in the head with a pillow before she had the chance to stop her.
"Oh you little..." Miriam gasped but laughed as she hit Lucy back. In no time, the children had begun a pillow fight. Forgetting for a moment what had happened earlier and simply enjoying being just children with no responsibilities.
❄️
As night fell the children were sound asleep together, well everyone except Miriam. She had left the tent and was sitting outside in the grass and gazed at the stars, wondering if her parents could see her. The night was warm, but as cold gusts of wind occasionally hit her body she would curse herself for not bringing a blanket. She would return to the tent if only she could fall asleep. There were too many thoughts inside her head. Thoughts of the previous events, thoughts of what might happen next and thoughts of home. Her deepest fear was of what would happen to her when she returned back to the Pierce estate. Would her uncle have the decency to wait until she turned eighteen? Or did he plan to murder her before in order to secure his claim to the company? Miriam knew she couldn't afford to wait for the answer, she had to found a solution to her situation and with haste.
