Edmund hadn't paid much attention to the conversation the beavers had with the rest of his siblings and Miriam until Mr. Beaver told them about Aslan and the meeting at the Stone Table. Since no one had taken notice of him during the entire stay at the dam, basically given him the cold shoulder, or that's what he felt anyway, it was easy for him to quietly edge himself away and out the door.
Edmund didn't actually want the other's to be turned into stone, he just wanted more Turkish Delight and be a prince and later king. He wanted Peter to pay for the way he'd been treated over the years and especially lately. Therefore, he made the reckless decision to leave them and somehow despite what he had heard, he still believed Jadis to be the rightful Queen and thought that all those people who said nasty things about her were the true enemies and most of it might not even be true. She had been nice to him, much nicer than his own siblings had. The only one who had never truly been mean to him, was Miriam, but he didn't know her enough to single her out as someone to spare.
He tried his ultimate best to come up with valid excuses for his decision, even though they weren't very good excuses. Because, deep down inside him he really knew that the White Witch was bad and cruel, but he did his best to deny it.
Anyway, it wasn't until he had left the dam and found himself in the freezing cold, that he realized he had left his coat behind. And since he couldn't go back, he had to walk all the way to the Queen's castle in just his jumper and it had begun to get dark too. So, he pulled up his collar and shuffled across the snow in the direction he had been given.

Meanwhile, back at the dam, the other children and Mr. Beaver had returned inside to Mrs. Beaver, and they were all getting ready for the long journey. Miriam and Susan helped Mrs. Beaver pack food and other supplies that they thought would be useful when a dreadful howl echoed outside.
"Hurry! They're coming." Mr. Beaver stressed.
"Are those wolves?" Miriam asked as she tried to make room for more food in a bag.
"Yes! It's the secret police! Now, let's get out of here before they catch us." A cranky Mr. Beaver said as he ushered the women to finish up. But as soon as they'd pack everything and closed the bag, they heard a rustle above them. The wolves had already arrived and were attacking the dam, trying their best to break through the wood.
"Now we really need to leave!" Peter yelled.
"I suppose the sewing machine's too heavy to bring?" Mrs. Beaver asked.
"Yes, it is. A great deal too heavy. And you don't think you'll be able to use it while we're on the run, I suppose?" Mr. Beaver asked her sarcastically.
"I just can't abide the though of them breaking it."
"Oh, please Mrs. Beaver, do hurry!" Miriam begged and Mrs. Beaver hurried over to where Mr. Beaver had led the children down a tunnel.
"Badger and me dug this. Comes out right near this place." Mr. Beaver said as they all walked through the dark tunnel.
"You told me it led to your mum's!" Mrs. Beaver scolded her husband. Lucy suddenly tripped on a root and Miriam stopped to lend her a hand. But then they heard the wolves howl again.
"They're in the tunnel." Lucy stated.
"Quick! This way." Mr. Beaver yelled, and they all followed him.
"Hurry! Quick! Quick! Quick!" Mrs. Beaver ushered the children.
"Run!" Peter screamed as the sound of the wolves got louder. They continued to run further through the tunnel but unfortunately, they ended up at a dead end.
