Miriam woke up early the next morning only to find herself alone. Both Lucy and Susan were gone and from the looks of it, their beds seemed too neat to have been slept in at all. Miriam got up and dressed herself in a pair of pants and a long-sleeved shirt. If she was going to fight in a war, she wasn't sure a dress would do her any favor, therefor she opt for something more comfortable and less restricted.
She got out of the tent and saw that only a few had woken up before her, one of them being Edmund. He was tending to his sword, getting it ready for the battle. Miriam approached him, alerting him of her presence with her soft hand on his shoulder.
"Good morning." Miriam greeted him before sitting down in the dewy grass next to him.
"Good morning." He greeted back with a welcoming smile.
"How are you feeling today?"
"Better. How about you? Peter told me what happened between you too."
"If you don't mind, I don't like to talk about Peter. Have you seen your sisters by any chance?"
"No, I haven't. Why? Weren't they sleeping?"
"No. When I woke up they weren't there and their beds had not been slept in."
"That's odd. But I'm sure they are here somewhere." Edmund turned his head in search for his sisters.
"You're probably right. Listen, I was going to get some more practice in before whatever war the White Witch think she's getting us into. You want to join me?"
"Sure. Where do you want to go?" Edmund nodded, ready to get up from his spot on the grass.
"How about that small open area over there. It's close enough to the camp and in safe distance from any surprise ambush." Miriam suggested pointing towards a small, opened field near the camp. Edmund nodded then got up on his feet, offering his hand to help Miriam up which she gladly accepted.
The two fought with ease. Edmund was a natural with his sword and to Miriam's surprise, his footwork was even smoother than hers. She had years of practice with fencing, yet Edmund were closing in on her ever so often. She never let him get too close though, always blocking his strikes no matter from what angle they came.
"You're good at this." Miriam laughed as she blocked Edmund's sword yet again.
"Thanks, so are you. How come you know so much about sword fighting?"
"I used to fence with my father growing up. Still do. But from the looks of it, I could use more practice. You are a natural, Edmund. Are you sure you haven't done this before?"
"Really? I've only practiced with Peter."
"Between you and me, I think you are better than him at this."
"I hope it's enough. I'm nervous for this fight. What if we don't win? What if we don't make it?"
"I'm nervous too but I trust in our army. We can only do our best and hope for victory. As long as we have hope and we believe in ourselves, we have a chance."
