One day later...

Lauren's POV

I walk into the living room with Sir David as we see everyone hanging, talking there.

"Colonel Aquila and his small army of troops will be arriving today," I speak up.

"What are we going to do?" Miss Cabello asks.

"If Colonel Aquila passes by here you all will stay out of sight, let us deal with him," Sir David said.

"As of now just keep going on with your day, we will update you when we hear news on Colonel Aquila," I said.

Sir David and I start walking away when I hear Camila call my name behind me.

I turn around and faintly smile at her. "What is the matter, Miss Cabello?" I ask.

"I am scared. If the Colonel sees you here, would he not expect that I am here as well?" Miss Cabello asks.

"Sir David, will you leave us be alone?" I speak towards him but continue staring at Camila.

"Of course," Sir David says.

We hear his footsteps start walking away and then disappear down the hallway.

My professional face falls as I step closer to Camila. "Do not be scared. I am here for you," I said.

"What if he... Does something to me?" Camila's voice shakes.

"He cannot hurt you in any way. I own you and he knows that he cannot hurt a slave that is owned," I said.

"Lauren, can you... Can you see if you can find anything out about my family?" Camila asks.

"I will try my best to get any sort of information about them," I said. I look around and lean down, quickly kissing her lips before leaving.

Shawn's POV

I am sitting inside the Colonel's carriage as I look outside, seeing the snow falling outside.

"We are almost at the estate," Colonel Aquila says.

"Who does this estate belong to, sir?" I ask.

"A certain Sir David Beckham. He is on the top of my suspicion list so we are going to visit him first," Colonel Aquila says.

For the rest of the ride, I stay quiet, and soon, an estate comes into view as the carriage slowly comes to a stop.

I get up and open the carriage door as I step out and hold the door open as the Colonel gets out.

The rest of the soldiers pull up and soon the Colonel walks up to the front door and knocks.

Seconds later, the door opens to reveal a butler as he bows immediately at the sight of the Colonel.

"Sir, how may I help you?" The butler asks.

"Can you get your sir?" Colonel Aquila speaks.

"Right away, sir. Do you want to come in?" The butler asks.

"I am not here to chit-chat. I am fine outside," Colonel Aquila says.

"I will get the sir now," The butler says.

A couple of minutes later, a finely dressed man and woman step out.

"Colonel Aquila, to what I do I owe this visit?" The man speaks.

"Sir David, I am here investigating the murder of The Major. I heard he was killed here in Tennessee and you being the most well-known slave owner, I wanted to come to you first. And I see Miss Lauren is here as well," Colonel Aquila says.

"Greetings, Colonel Aquila," The woman says.

"We can discuss the topic inside. Would you like a drink?" The man asks Colonel Aquila.

"Maybe just one," Colonel Aquila says. He begins to move but then stops and looks at me. "How rude of me. Sir David, Miss Lauren, I would like to introduce you to one of the soldiers here. This is Shawn," Colonel Aquila says.

"Sir, ma'am," I bow at them.

"You could address me as Mr. Beckham," The man says.

"I am Miss Jauregui," The woman says.

"Shall we go inside now?" Mr. Beckham says.

He and Miss Jauregui lead us inside and into the living room.

"I will leave you, men, to talk," Miss Jauregui says.

"Miss Jauregui please take Shawn with you," Colonel Aquila says.

"But sir-"

"This is a matter that does not concern you, Shawn. Do as I ordered, enjoy the little freedom you get for now," Colonel Aquila cuts me off.

"Yes, sir," I said.

"I can show you around the grounds if you would like," Miss Jauregui speaks as she leads me down the hallway.

"I would not want to bother you," I said.

"No, please, it will be my pleasure," Miss Jauregui says.

I furrow my eyebrows in confusion as I stare at Miss Jauregui. "I am sorry if this is rude, and if it is I beg you, do not tell Colonel Aquila, but you don't seem like most slave owners, you are... Kind, ma'am," I said.

Miss Jauregui leads me outside as she looks around. "I cannot discuss what I do with you given that I rarely know you but I have some questions," Miss Jauregui says.

"I will try my best to answer them, Miss Jauregui," I said.

"Is Colonel Aquila your owner?" Miss Jauregui asks.

"Yes. He... Sold my family and keep me for himself," I said.

"Why did you become a slave?" Miss Jauregui asks.

"Fought back the Confederate Army," I answered.

"Are you... Part of a tribe?" Miss Jauregui asks.

"Why the question, ma'am?" I ask.

"No reason, can I trust you to stay here as I fetch someone?" Miss Jauregui asks.

"If that is an order, I will follow," I said.

"Good," Miss Jauregui says.

Camila's POV

I sit in my room, per Lauren's request just so I don't run into the Colonel.

I hear knocks on my door then to it being open as Lauren steps inside.

"What is it?" I ask.

"The Colonel is in the living room but I am attending one of his soldiers and I have been questioning him," Lauren says.

"About what?" I ask.

"I asked him why he is a slave and if he is part of a tribe and his story adds up to yours," Lauren says.

"You are joking with me," I said.

"I most certainly am not. He is outside if you want to see him," Lauren says.

"Lead the way," I said.

Lauren leads me outside and once we step outside the soldier turns to look at us and his face falls in shock as my lower lip starts to quiver.

"Camila!" Shawn says.

"Shawn..." I said.
