Lauren's POV
"We need to send word to my brother. Immediately," Camila speaks behind me.
After I told Mr. Holland to ready the men and the carriage so we can travel to Kentucky, I closed the door but I'd just been staring at the doorknob.
"We cannot take them all on," I said.
"Besides my brother and your men? You do not have any more allies in the group of soldiers?" Camila asks.
"None on the Brigadier's," I answer.
"And what if we request aid from the Union?" Camila suggests.
I turn around and tilt my head to the side, considering her suggestion.
"Not a bad suggestion but I do not believe the General of the Union can send a group of soldiers in time," I said.
"Retrieve the courier back before he gets far," Camila says.
We both leave the office hurriedly and outside as I walk up to the men.
"Mr. Holland, quickly retrieve the courier back," I said.
Mr. Holland nods and hops in the front of the carriage as he leaves in a hurry.
"We are going to ask for aid from the Union. There would be too many men in that camp," I inform the men.
"Shawn is there, father," Camila speaks.
Alejandro stiffens and stares at his daughter before looking over at me. "Does the Union know about your allies in the Confederate army?" Alejandro asks.
"Every single one. Except for Shawn but I will include it in the letter," I said.
After the courier returned with Mr. Holland, we are back in the office as I add to the letter for the General of the Union and an extra letter to give to Shawn when he passes by Kentucky before the courier leaves again.
"Will he be safe going into that camp?" Camila asks from where she's seated.
"My partners and I have a handful of Confederate couriers around the slave states that work for us. It is how we can get letters to our men in the Confederate Army," I walk over to her.
"I hope he can get the letter to Shawn in time," Camila looks down at the floor.
I kneel in front of her and grip her chin, lifting it so her eyes meet mine.
"He will and he will get the letter to the General in time as well," I said.
"We have buried ourselves in a dangerous hole," Camila says.
I lean closer and connect our foreheads together. "Do not worry. I will protect you no matter what. I will kill anyone who dares touch you," I said.
"And I will as well," Camila says.
I close the distance between our lips as Camila sighs, leaning into me.
"I love you, Camila," I mumble.
Camila buries her fingers into my hair and smiles. "And I love you," She whispers.
"Come on..." I pull away, "We need to get going."
"I suppose. Are we getting the carriage to ourselves this time?" Camila smiles.
"Yes. The men are riding on horses and your father will be upfront with Mr. Holland," I said.
"Perfect. I have you all to myself from here to Kentucky," Camila says.
"Whatever you wish me to do. I will not hesitate," I smile.
Camila giggles and kisses me over and over again. "I am going to enjoy this trip," She whispers.
The next day...
Shawn's POV
I have been called to the messenger tent where soldiers go and pick up any letters that have been sent to them.
I grab the letter the man handed me and walk back out to spot my mother in the nurse's tent, stuffing bloody bandages into a sack.
Checking that the Brigadier General or Colonel Aquila aren't around, I make my way over to her.
"Good morning, mother," I hold myself back from smiling.
"Good morning, my beautiful boy," Sinuhe says. She looks down at the letter and then back up at me. "A letter, huh?" Sinuhe softly smiles.
"It may be from Camila," I said.
"Go ahead and read it," Sinuhe says.
I break open the wax seal and sit down on one of the beds as I take the letter out of the envelope, unfolding it as I begin reading.
Shawn,
Lauren and I are heading to Kentucky right at this moment as you are reading this letter.
We are going to kill the Brigadier General but do not worry, we are aware that Colonel Aquila is there as well and the number of men which is why I am telling you that we have sent a letter to the General of the Union to offer us aid in this battle.
Father is well and alive. I found him. I saved him. Freed him. Now we just need to find mother, kill the rest of the Elite Circle, and the Union to win the war before we can all be free and happy.
I will unite with you soon. We both will.
I set the letter down and look up at my mother who has frozen in her spot, eyes wide.
"She freed father. And now she is coming here to kill the Brigadier," I said softly.
