Wait For It

Theodosia writes me a letter every day
I'm keeping the bed warm while her husband is away
He's on the British side in Georgia
But he can keep all of Georgia
Theodosia, she's mine

She is, Burr thought with a soft smile.

Love doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep loving anyway
We laugh and we cry and we break
And we make our mistakes

He's not wrong, Washington thought grimly.

And if there's a reason I'm by her side
When so many have tried
Then I'm willing to wait for it
I'm willing to wait for it

My grandfather was a fire and brimstone preacher
(Preacher, Preacher, Preacher)
But there are things that the
Homilies and hymns won't teach ya
(Teach ya, Teach ya, Teach ya)

Burr isn't wrong, Laurens nodded.

My mother was a genius (Genius)
My father commanded respect (Respect, Respect)
When they died they left no instructions
Just a legacy to protect

Death doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep living anyway
We rise and we fall and we break
And we make our mistakes

Everyone bowed their heads in remembrance to those who had died in their time. Jefferson and Madison couldn't help but glance over at Burr and Hamilton, wondering how their friendship turned sour so quickly.

And if there's a reason I'm still alive
When everyone who loves me has died
I'm willing to wait for it (Wait for it)
I'm willing to wait for it

I am the one thing in life I can control
(Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it)
I am inimitable
I am an original

I'm not falling behind or running late
(Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it)
I'm not standing still
I am lying in wait (Wait, wait, wait)

"What's the difference?" Es asked.

"If he's standing still, he's not doing anything," Angelica explained. "If he's lying in wait, he is doing something; waiting."

Hamilton faces and endless uphill climb
(Climb, climb, climb)
He has something to prove
He has nothing to lose
(Lose, lose, lose, lose)

I do have something to lose, Hamilton thought to himself as he glanced over to the older version of his son before looking down at the younger version of his wife. I have my family that I could lose.

Hamilton's pace is relentless
He wastes no time
(Time, time, time)
What is it like in his shoes?

"Shit," Hamilton said immediately, believing he had said it in his head and not out loud. Everyone was silent, trying to understand what he meant. Es, who somewhat knew of Hamilton's childhood, felt a wave of sympathy wash over her as she snuggled into the man's side. Hamilton, out of instinct, wrapped his arms around the girl.

Hamilton doesn't hesitate
He exhibits no restraint
He takes and he takes and he takes
And he keeps winning anyway
He changes the game
He plays and he raises the stakes

So I can survive, Hamilton thought as Es moved so that she could rest her head on his chest, a feeling of fatigue washing over her. So my family can survive.

And if there's a reason
He seems to thrive when so few survive,

Because I 'm used to acting like this. It's how I survived after my mother died.

Then Goddamn it
I'm willing to wait for it (Wait for it)
I'm willing to wait for it

Life doesn't discriminate
Between the sinners and the saints
It takes and it takes and it takes
(And we keep living anyway)
We rise (and we fall)
We fall (and we break)
(And we make our mistakes)
And if there's a reason I'm still alive
When so many have died
Then I'm willin' to-

Wait for it (Wait for it, wait for it)
Wait for it (Wait for it, wait for it)
(Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it)
(Wait)

Hamilton leaned backwards, one arm keeping Es secured against his chest whilst his other arm went behind Laurens and gave Burr's shoulder a gentle squeeze. Burr turned and smiled at the man, his hand moving up to give Hamilton's a squeeze back. Removing his hand from Burr's shoulder, the auburn-haired man wrapped both his arms around Es to keep her secured against him.
