"Mark! Mark! Wake up!"
I turned to see who had shaken my shoulder , and saw my mom.
"Are you going to sleep all morning? Don't you remember what day it is?"
I thought about it for a minute.
Christmas .
I lept out of my bed and ran towards the door. My feet were cold and so we're my hands. But I felt the sweet relief of warmth by the fireplace. My radio that I bought last night was playing classic Christmas songs. We figured out how to play current music from the present by turning the dial back six times. Frank Sinatra played throughout the room.
Jake and dad looked at me.
"I thought you were gonna sleep all day." Jake says. "Apparently, we did too much yesterday" I looked at my watch, which was set to New York's time zone.
"It's only 7:30, chill out. " I sat down on the rug next to Jake's chair. He handed me a cup of not cocoa and we sat in silence for a few minutes listening to the music. Dad walked over to the fireplace and unhooked the stockings from their places on the mantle. He handed them out and looked in his own curiously.
"Wonder what we got this time!" He said.
Mom pulled a small glass box out of her stocking . Inside the box was a snake-like creature with a beak and feathers.
"Oh, an Occamy! Thank you Saint Nicholas! What did you get, boys? "
I pulled a small cardboard box about as long as my finger out of my stocking. Inside the box was a thin sheet of paper that concealed a fancy well pen. On the side of the pen there were words inscribed upon it.
Be true to yourself, for only you can make you happy.
The passage gave me a little feeling in my stomach that I couldn't find good or bad. It didn't matter .
"I got a well pen." I stated .
"Ooh, fancy." Mom said. "Look at you! My little Mr. Wailer with a well pen, looking so professional."
Jake pulled a small book out of his stocking that had professionally written sheet music from composers all over time.
There was a knocking on the window.
"Oh? What could that be." My mom said.
" I'll take a looksee. " Dad said. He walked over to the window which was concealed behind a curtain of velvet. When he moved he curtain, I saw the outline of an owl.
"Gregory?" I asked. Dad shook his head and let the bird in. The bird flew over to me and dropped a white envelope that smelled like hot cocoa on my lap. I assumed it was from Ivy because the handwriting was a unique bubbly sort of writing that only she had.
"Who's it from? " Jake asked.
"Ivy, I think." I flipped the envelope open with ease and read it's message .
Dear, Mark and Jake,
How is New York?(If you made it yet.) Have you ran into any American Witches or Wizards? Anyway, I don't want to interrupt your holiday.
Lots of love,
Ivy Whitmore
"Well, you'd better get a treat for the owl. That was a long and quick flight." Jake said. I walked to the kitchen and found a small biscuit that I tossed to the owl. He went and made himself comfortable on the banister across the room from us.
"I got a.....reusable howler??? I didn't think that was even possible, seeing how they have a nasty habit of tearing themselves up." Dad took a pen from the coffee table in his right and started writing .
After a while, the howler lifted itself up and said, or shouted:
"DORIS, MARK, AND JAKE I AM ABSOLUTELY CONFUNDED WITH SUCH A TOOL AS THIS! I YOU AREN'T ENJOYING THIS I WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO TEAR MY SELF UP AND DANCE MY OWN REMNANTS TO THE FIRE! ARE YOU ENTERTAINED? " The howler shouted, but when it was done, it shot out the sheet of paper inside of it and tell to the ground.
"Well, I guess it does work. Well that's handy isn't it?"
" Yep! " We all said. I stuck my hand in the stocking again to pull out a peppermint stick, but instead I pulled out a card.
Be careful not to tell you parents about me, I'm not really supposed to be selling or even using magic. So save us both the trouble please.
Flynn Baggs
I sneakily handed the note to Jake. His eyes widened and he dropped the paper into his got cocoa.
"What was that for?" I whispered.
"Destroy the evidence. " He said ominously. He laughed so I knew he was just joking.
We opened our presents and laughed cheerfully. Then I realized Jake wasn't with his family.
"Jake. Do you think your family is lonely right now?"
He rolled his eyes, " No, they are too busy working to ever have time for Christmas. I guarantee you that when we get back to Hogwarts, there will be a heartless letter about how they are sorry they missed Christmas again. And besides, if they are home, my sister's there. Their favorite. " He looked at the fireplace and pulled his knees to his chest. "To be honest, this is probably the only Christmas I've ever had. Well since I rode the sleigh with Santa."
I started tearing up. "Awe, sorry, Jake. I didn't mean to open up old wounds. " Somehow a year escaped from my eye.
"It's fine. Like I said, this is the only Christmas I've ever had. So I'm thankful to have a friend like you."
"Hey, is it even Christmas in England right now?" I asked.
"No, they're Time zone is ahead of us. I don't know by how long though. "
"Well, I'm gonna go try out this new violin on the streets." I say. I got a new violin for Christmas among other things the I will mention later. " Wanna make some American money with me?"
"Sure. I will get the harp!"
The cold air bit the tip of my nose and I tune my violin higher than usual. (The cold air makes the violin fall out of tune) I trained my now and played a scale to get peoples attention. Jake played a scale in the harp that is now his. There was a small circle of people around me so I started to play Der Erlkonig mashed up with Silent Night. Jake played a soothing melody that suited the shift in notes that I created as I went along through the song.
There violin has a more crisp sound then my other one. This one was older and had newer strings. I couldn't help but feel bad for my other violin. It was never my intention to replace it.
When I was almost done, I saw that we had amassed a decent crowd. Some people were dancing and singing, others threw money into my violin case. They all seemed happy and that made me happy. When I finished Der Erlkonig, I switched to an upbeat Irish tune I had heard years ago, but never perfected. People danced happily, I even saw Flynn Baths dance through the crowd to get to the other side of the street. He dropped something in my case, but I don't know what.
That might we all roamed around New York and explored its wonders. I decided not to write back to Ivy because she would have already been at Hogwarts with us by the time she received the letter. We walked around lady liberty and Jake took a picture with the camera he got this morning. We walked across the Brooklyn bridge and realized we had been walking for hours. We had even met people playing instruments outside like we did earlier. Mom and Dad dropped us off at the hotel and went to find something to eat. They brought back a bounty of chicken and beans and other foods that all tasted fantastic. We enjoyed that night and fell asleep in the chairs in the living room.
