So this should not have taken this long but I was doing it and I thought "hey you know what would be cool? If I showed you guys my process" cuz I had all my nice sketch colors so here we go
This is in no way a tutorial by the way, I am not claiming to know anything at all
If you wanna use things you see be my guest though! But take it with a grain of salt. Or a pinch of salt. Or a nice healthy dose of daily salt which I'm pretty sure is just a pinch but pretend it's more anyway
Insert thumbnail sketch! Whoooo
Basically, I take my canvas, and I make a small-ish box in the corner. Then I kinda scribble a basic sense of the poses in different colors, blow it up to the size I want the whole page to be, and drop the opacity
This isn't necessary, but it helps get my proportions right since it's easier to see if something's too big on a smaller scale
Then I do a more detailed sketch over my thumbnail (you can't see it but it's usually under there). This is where I get my gesture line in and my "anatomy" and all that fun stuff
And theeeennnnn I get the faces and the clothes on there (clothes are always in a different color so they're easier to differentiate). This step is where I spend the most amount of time, cuz I keep finding things to adjust and fix and it's so infuriating...
And this is also the step where I decided I didn't like the way Damon's legs were positioned and now I wish I didn't change it cuz it looked better before but OH WELL :D
Aaaand then I lineart and guys let me TELL YOU I found this awesome brush that I absolutely love it's called like fade watercolor opaque or something and it's got like lowered opacity so you can get different line thicknesses and opacities and I love it
Granted that means you have to kind of go over the lines instead of just filling the colors in with the bucket tool but if you set them to multiply it's okay
(I actually like the lineart better than the colored version but again oh well you guys still get to see it cuz you're my favorites)
Yes I flipped the canvas because Damon's undercut was on the wrong side
("Your scar's on the wrong side." "The scar is NOT ON THE WRONG SIDE! *Emo hood flip*")
Bonus points if you get the references, anywho
Yeah so I'm I'm not totally happy with this one. It took me ten hours (ten hours!!) and I don't like the coloring. It's weird, the whole thing's kinda weird and I can't place my finger on why. Idk, maybe I'll redraw it in ten years
But yeah a coloring process is a whole other issue to tackle, especially because I have no specific way of coloring but uh...yeah.
My only trick from this one is Repeat Colors. It adds a sense of unity. If you've got black hair and black pants, use the same black. If you've got a golden bow tie and need a color for the soles of your navy shoes, use the golden (if it looks good, here it did but it might not always).
Unfortunately I couldn't fit any orange in there which is sad cuz aidyn's eyes don't quite pop like I wanted them too (contrasting colors baby, I really wanted orange and sapphire blue)
Also I know this is a long one already but I just wanna say I did use quite a few references, and just to prove how helpful they are, I got Damon's hands down in at most two tries so....use references kids they make your life a lot easier
Anyway, hope you all have a wonderful day!
