In a dark forest, in a half-abandoned castle, on a high stone throne sat Ludo. His fingers tapping on the stone armrest and unstable magic sparking around his wand. A variety of monsters surrounded the great Ludo. All useless in the kappa's eyes. An army of fools incapable even of the simplest tasks.
Ludo smiled as a hooded figure stepped into the throne room, dragging behind him the unconscious body of Monster Claw. The stranger laid the monster in front of Ludo and kneeled on one knee in reverence.
"Oh, the great king of monsters, I bring you the bounty that you have demanded," The stranger proclaimed in a booming voice.
Ludo smiled. "Is he alive?"
"Yes, your highness."
"Brilliant," Ludo's smile widened ever so slightly. The kappa gestured to one of his underlings. "Lock that coward in a dungeon. I'll decide what to do with him later."
A giant monster with dirty green skin and tiny bat wing-like protrusions on his head hurried to the unconscious Monster Claw. With difficulty, he threw the lobster onto his shoulders and carried him away into the dark, damp corridors of the castle.
Ludo looked at the stranger. "For such a great work, you deserve your reward," Ludo stated. The kappa outstretched the wand, unstable lightning sparkling around it and Ludo's hand. A green, jagged beam of energy streamed from the wand, hitting the area right in front of the stranger. As the magic faded, a small bag filled with gold coins was resting in front of the stranger, static electricity sparking of it. "What was promised and a bit more," Ludo smirked, pleased with himself.
The stranger peered at the gold and then glanced at Ludo. "Oh great king of monsters, I am thankful for your generosity. But let your humbles servant be selfish and ask for a different reward."
Ludo frowned. He hated when people thought they were important enough to demand anything of him. But this stranger proved himself useful. "You may ask. But be careful, if I don't like what I hear there will be consequences," Ludo declared, sparks flying out of his wand.
"Thank you, you're highness," The lizardman bowed. "May I, a simple man, join the ranks of your glorious army?"
Whispers of surprise spread throughout the crowd of monsters.
The idea tickled Ludo's fancy. Having someone actually capable could help his master plan immensely. And this stranger knew how to show respect to the greatness that was Ludo. A smile curled on Ludo's beak. "I might grant you that request, stranger, but first I have to know who you are. After all, I can't accept someone who hides their face from me. So remove your hood, stranger, and I shall consider your request to join my ranks."
"Of course, sire," The stranger nodded. Slowly, the lizard man removed his hood.
Shock ran through the room as the crowd stepped back in fear. A massive grin curled on Ludo's face as all the possibilities ran through his head.
In front of Ludo stood a grey-skinned lizard man. His hair jet black and messy. His yellow eyes round, sad and tired. The stranger bowed to Ludo as the crowd was drowned in whispering and chit-chatting. "Toffee at your service," The stranger introduced himself, unsteadily as if doing this for the first time for a long, long while.
Ludo lifted his wand, magic sparking out of it. The chattering monsters going quiet in an instance. He stepped closer to kneeling Toffee, the height difference between the two prevalent even now. "I welcome you to my army, Toffee the queen slayer," Ludo proclaimed, unfathomable excitement in his voice.
