Chapter 2
~1840~
Cassandra Abernathy had just had her fourth birthday a couple of days ago. It had been fun and lots of people had come. Cassandra was most excited because for the first time she had been able to meet a very exciting relative of hers. Her father had a one cousin, John Woods, who had a daughter.
Madeline Woods was her name, she was just a year older then Cassandra; they had hit it off the moment they met. Madeline had been so much fun to be around. They had done a lot mischievous things together on her birthday; Madeline had been quite the trouble maker. Madeline and her father and mother had stayed for some days but they left too soon to both of the girl’s displeasure.
Cassandra had done so many bad things on her birthday and during the stay with Madeline that she had felt guilty doing them, yet she went through the of being feeling naughty was not something she felt or did often and the fact that she was doing something bad, that made it that much more fun worthwhile. Being the obedient, quiet and shy girl wasn’t fun at all, she always had to look and act well-ordered and demure. She had never laughed so much then as she had with Madeline that her ribs hurt so much the felt like they were going to break.
She had received many gifts on her birthday, the one she liked the most was the pony that her father had given her. She wasn’t allowed to ride it yet because she was small and her parents were scared that she could hurt herself but she had still loved. She had received many extravagant things like jewelry, dolls and other things that they believed a little girl would want. The kids had been pleasant enough to her but Cassandra was more drawn to playing with Madeline, the mischievous cousin of hers, who could anyone and make them believe she was an angel with her beautiful golden locks and baby blue eyes and angelic features.
“Let’s go put some good on that woman’s hair, it looks like a birds nest already, might as well feed them too,” Madeline said pointing to a snobby plump woman sitting at the corner making snide remarks about the party.
“I don’t think we should,” Cassandra said hesitantly but from Madeline’s smile of amusement and eagerness, she was finding herself wanting to agree.
“Come on, it will be fun. Imagine how her reaction would be,” Madeline said chuckling.
“Uh…Okay,” Cassandra said feeling excited all of a sudden.
And they did and boy was it worth it. They had managed to do it so discreetly that they didn’t get caught. They ran outside and hid behind a tree and laughed and laughed, that was until Madeline targeted a new victim. Madeline was too much fun and even when people thought that it was them they just smile and played nice for a while until people looked away and forgot them. It wasn’t very hard as the adults at the party ever so much as glanced at them or any of the kids at the party. It wasn’t hard to pretend to be good for two minutes.
