Chapter 15
“She’s right, she can’t,” said Miss. Steele.
“Why?” was Trent’s simple response, his heart had broken when Madeline had said that she couldn’t marry him. Was he not enough for her? He had looks and he had money. Soon he would inherit a good title, then why could she not? Madeline must not like him then, that was the only thing that seemed reasonable enough.
Trent saw Madeline turn and face Miss. Steele as if asking for silent permission, but Miss. Steele nodded her had no.
Madeline turned to Miss. Steele to see if would be fine to tell Trent that she couldn’t marry because she was engaged.
Miss. Steele knew why Madeline turned to look at her but Lord Woods had given her strict orders, no one outside his house was to know of Madeline’s marriage. All she could do was nod no to Madeline; she saw how her face fell a little bit more. She could tell that Madeline loved Trent, even though she herself didn’t know it. Miss. Steele noticed that Trent had noticed their exchange of silent words and his face also fell.
“Do you not feel anything for me, Madeline,” Trent asked solemnly.
“Trent, you have no idea how deeply my feelings are for you. Even though we have known each in so little time, I couldn’t help but have feelings for you. I wish I could marry, truly…but I can’t. My father wouldn’t allow it,” she said, the last part was a lie although not completely.
“You could but I doubt that it will be any good,” Madeline said unsure.
