Chapter 3

~1845~

Four years had passed without any meetings with Richard. Cassandra had studied hard and her governess had helped her to control her easily tampered with temper and how to act in difficult situations. Cassandra was now nine and Richard thirteen, Richard had made no attempt to communicate with her, he had no interest whatsoever in doing so either.

Over the course of the past few years Cassandra felt that she had matured and felt capable of meeting with Richard and she felt confident enough that she was sure that she would be able to have a peaceful gathering with her fiancé. She would have to get used to it since as far as she knew there was no way out of marrying him.

She would just have to let the insults go, ignore them because that was what a lady should do. Cassandra was sure that she could have a peaceful afternoon with him if she just let the rude comments pass.

Cassandra asked her parents to arrange a meeting with Richard. She was bound to seeing him again since William wouldn’t relinquish the contract. Cassandra had no other choice but to marry Richard so she felt that she might as well get used to it or at least find a way to deal with him.

Her parents were shocked when Cassandra asked them to arrange the meeting with Richard, beyond words was their surprise. They still remembered the how desperately she had asked to not have to see Richard again. She was crying and pleading, she looked torn to pieces when she had asked.

Nonetheless they arranged the meeting but they were by very confused in their daughter’s change of heart. The memory of her begging never to see Richard again in her life was ingrained in their minds.

“Why do you want to meet with Richard now after so long? Before, you were to set on not having to cross paths with him again and now you want to be in the same room with him,” her mother asked perplexed when she was helping Cassandra into bed.

“Mom, I have no other choice but to marry him. I will try to have a have a decent relationship so that when we are married, we’re not on each other’s throat all the time,” Cassandra replied calmly but she herself was skeptical over the meeting. She just hoped that Richard had changed over the years just as she felt she had.

“Very well,” her mother said, still not entirely convinced. “Your father and I will arrange the meeting.”

A week later Lord William Salvatore came to Cassandra’s home; he of course thinking he had won had a triumph smile on his face. When he had received a letter that said that Cassandra had asked for the meeting to take place he was confused at first but later it changed to utter content. Richard on the other hand had been furious and looked to be angry. He had changed, his face seemed manlier and he had filled out a little since their last encounter. He was still very handsome but unfortunately it happened that his view on Cassandra had not changed.
