Chapter 14

Two days later there was a ball and of course Madeline was attending to trying to use all the time she had of freedom.

Leo and Julia were at the ball so Madeline decided to head towards them with Miss. Steele. But before they reached them Trent come into her line of vision. Their eyes connected and he smiled. Madeline was feeling such joy in just seeing him that her smile was radiant.

"May I have the next dance, Madeline," he asked just as a song was ending. Madeline was sure that he had planned to do it so Madeline wouldn’t have a way of saying no.

"Why of course Trent," she said while getting a hold of his arm. Madeline felt overjoyed but of course tried to not show it too much.

The song started as did their dancing.

"Have you been well," Trent asked her.

"I've been well, thank you for asking," Madeline responded, she said when her arranged marriage came to mind and gloomed her spirit a little.

"That's splendid, well I'm still searching for a wife," he told her as if it was a fleeting thing but that he was almost descriptively he was trying to tell her something.

"Oh and how has that been working out, I'm sure that there are many mothers here that are trying for you to court their daughters," She tried to sound amused and cheerful but her heart was telling her otherwise, it was breaking by the second.

"It is really too bad that none of their daughters interest me," he said seriously at Madeline.

When the song was almost over Trent asked "Would you like to get some fresh air."

Madeline looked over his shoulder to see if Miss. Steele was looking their way. She wasn't, she was having an animated conversation with Julia and Leo. Madeline had to check because Miss. Steele gave her a long lecture not long ago because she had decided to leave to the garden alone with Trent while they were at his estate. Madeline knew that she should be along with a man because it was unlady-like but Madeline didn't really care at the moment, she felt that she really needed fresh air and she could spend time alone with Trent then it was even better.
