Tobacco smoke wafted under the sleeping girl's bedroom door, waking her up with a scrunched up face. It's been a day but her hunger has not crawled in yet. However, with that tobacco smoke, she knew he was home.
"Uncle?" She softly called out, her bare feet walking towards the coach's bedroom. His futon was laid out but everything else around him was messy. Not that it was something new, anyway.
Akane knocked on the door earning a clipped 'come in' from her uncle. Upon entering, she was greeted by a heavy scent of tobacco. She waved her hand around her nose trying to clear the scent. With this much, he must be thinking hard.
Without saying a word, Akene sprawled out on his uncle's futon and looked at the clip playing on his tv.
Volleyball?
"How was the game, Uncle?", Akane mumbled under Keishin's covers. She was trying to get to a comfortable position so she won't have to strain looking up at the television.
"Mhm... Good. It was good." Keishin's eyes never took off the screen as he answered his niece, dropping tobacco ashes on the floor.
Akane's eyes flickered to her uncle and she smiled in the slightest way. He's indeed focusing on the game. He wants to help the team.
'Well, I guess that's better than having him mope around in the store.', she thought.
The two watched in silence as the hours ticked by. Both were taking down notes mentally of what happened in the game, the other consciously picking up on things, and the other unconsciously doing it. They are Ukai's after all.
Not too long, Akane's eyes started to feel heavy. She gave in to the call of her slumber. When the game ended, Keishin turned off the television and went through the events of the game in his head. As he turned back to his futon, he saw his niece sleeping soundly. His heart tugged heavily as he swept off the hair covering most of her face.
'Onee-chan.' He thought and once more, behind the walls of the house, he opened his heart. Tears flowed freely at his cheeks as he remembered that fateful incident. His anguish resurfaced and he wants nothing more than to let it out. However, he took a glance at the sweet innocent girl and that's all it took for the thought to melt away. He cannot just trash around the way he used to, anymore. He has a fragile little heart in his pocket now and he swore to protect it with all his might.
Wiping away his tears and snot, he composed himself. Then he carried Akane back to her room. She would be scared if she woke up in an unfamiliar room at times like this.
