I stood up quickly, grabbing Mi-nyeo’s arm. “Stay near the back,” I said under my breath, pulling her with me through the chaos.
Out of nowhere, pain shot through my head—something had hit me. Blood started dripping down my face. I turned to see a man labeled 027 walking toward me. His face flickered in and out of the dim lighting, but he looked wiry. Desperate. Unhinged.
“You!” he barked. “Why the hell are you so special, huh? Everyone keeps staring at you like you're some goddamn savior. You're nothing. A nobody. Anyone who thinks otherwise is blind.”
His words were venom, but his presence didn’t shake me. Instead, I laughed.
A low chuckle at first…then it built. “Hah…Haha…AHAHAHAHAAA!”
He froze for a second, confused.
I leaned forward, voice cold and sharp. “Aw. What’s the matter? Mommy and daddy didn’t love you enough?”
That sent him over the edge. “YOU BITCH! I’LL RIP YOUR THROAT OUT AND PAINT THE WALLS WITH YOUR BLOOD!”
He lunged.
I didn’t move. My eyes were dull now—empty. I was calm, almost eerily so.
Just as he reached me, a blur of motion passed between us.
Thwack.
Sae-byeok’s knife buried itself into his skull. His body dropped like a stone.
She turned, panting, furious. “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! You just stood there!”
I shrugged. “I was waiting for him to get closer.”
“Oh, yeah? ‘Just waiting until I die’— great plan.” She scoffed.
I chuckled softly. She slapped the back of my head. “Stop laughing, idiot.”
She grabbed me and Mi-nyeo, dragging us toward the rear of the room again.
“I could’ve saved her…” Mi-nyeo murmured.
“What?” Sae-byeok glanced at her.
Mi-nyeo didn’t respond. She just stared ahead, eyes glazed as more bodies hit the ground around us.
Suddenly, I saw him—“Deok-su!” I called out. He looked up from someone he was clearly beating senseless.
“PLEASE! STOP! I’M SCARED EVERYONE’S GOING TO DIE!” someone screamed. It was the old man, standing on top of a bunk bed, trembling.
Just then, the lights blazed back on. Pink-suited guards swarmed the room.
I stood up and left our hiding spot with Mi-nyeo and Sae-byeok, stepping into a scene of pure carnage. Blood everywhere. Bodies. Silence.
A circle-masked guard pulled Gi-hun aside.
Curious, I edged closer.
“Gi-hun,” the guard whispered, voice lower now. “It’s me. Detective Jun-ho. I snuck in to find my brother. Have you seen him?”
Gi-hun shook his head, whispering a quick, “Sorry.”
Then Jun-ho’s eyes landed on me.
I looked away quickly, trying to disappear into the crowd.
Too late.
“Player 069,” he called.
I froze, then turned slowly.
He gestured for me to come closer.
I sighed, stepping toward him. No one stopped us—the guards either didn’t care or were too obsessed to intervene.
“Did I do something wrong?” I asked quietly.
He lowered his voice. “No. I’m not one of them. I’m Jun-ho. Just call me that when we’re alone.”
“I know. I overheard you and Gi-hun.”
He nodded, but the air between us felt...strange.
Then he stepped closer. Close enough that I could feel the heat of him.
His arm wrapped around my waist. I instinctively grabbed his shoulders, confused.
“You thought you could get away with what you did back there?” he murmured.
“What? What do you mean?” I blinked.
“You don’t remember?” he said, his tone darkening. “Let me remind you.”
Without warning, he pinned me against the wall, his knee wedged between my legs so I couldn’t move. I was somewhat, glad—that we were behind some bunk beds, but still.
His breath ghosted over my cheek. “Like I said…you're not supposed to touch the guards. Unless they touch you first.”
My face burned—a deep blush rising as his mask shifted slightly, revealing his face to only me. I inhaled sharply.
Then he kissed me.
Not a peck. A deep, possessive kiss that left no room for misunderstanding. A kiss that screamed mine.
I didn’t know how to respond—frozen, overwhelmed. But for a moment, I kissed him back.
Just as quickly, he pulled away and smirked, lowering his mask again. Then he took my hand and led me back to the others.
People stared—some with curiosity, others with suspicion. Most guards looked confused. A few…jealous.
Jun-ho turned, gave me one last look, and disappeared into the sea of pink.
