A black van rolled up to the curb beside me. The window lowered, revealing someone in a pink jumpsuit with a circle on their mask.

“Y/N L/N?” Their voice was flat.

     “Yeah, that’s me.”

     “Password?”

     Shit.

I paused, trying to remember—then the person cut in.

“It’s fine. You can get in.”

Couldn’t see their face, but something about the tone told me I didn’t have much of a choice. I climbed in.

Inside, four people were already out cold. I glanced at the guy in the mask again. He was still staring at me. I think.

“So...are we gonna go or what?”

He turned to the front and pressed a button.

     Gas hissed through the vents.

     Oh hell no—

And just like that, I was out.

     Voices.

     A lot of them.

I groaned and grabbed for the nearest pillow, shoving it over my face. Then it hit me.

I sat up fast, the noise coming into focus—dozens, maybe hundreds of people all moving around a massive room.

I stood up, a little dizzy, and headed down the stairs. In my rush, I bumped into someone.

     “Watch it.”

I looked up. A tall guy. Way taller than me.

     “Sorry,” I muttered, stepping back.

He looked down, his face turning a bit red. Okay...weird reaction.

“You good?” I asked, raising a brow.

“Yeah, yeah. Just warm in here.” He wiped fake sweat off his forehead like he was trying to play it cool.

I smirked. “Warm? I’m freezing. This place needs a heater.”

He chuckled, then nodded toward a giant board on the wall that read: 457.

“That’s how many of us are here. I’m number 457.”

I looked down at the number stitched to my jacket.

     069. Of course.

“Let’s skip the numbers,” he said, holding out his hand. “I’m Gi-hun.”

“Y/N.” I shook his hand. His grip was strong—his hands calloused.

Before I could say more, a commotion broke out across the room.

A bulky guy had a girl by the hair.

“So you’re independent now?” he sneered. “Don’t look so independent to me.”

He laughed and kicked her in the stomach. She hit the ground hard.

Gi-hun pushed through the crowd and shoved the guy back, then crouched beside the girl. He grabbed her jacket, pulling her slightly forward.

“It’s you. You took my money. Where is it?”

The girl stayed silent. Just stared at him.

The buff guy shoved Gi-hun out of the way, shouting something, but I wasn’t really listening anymore.

I walked past the crowd and knelt beside the girl—067 was on her uniform.

     “You alright?” I asked.

She didn’t answer, but let me help her to her feet.

“Hey! Don’t help her!” the big guy barked.

     I ignored him.

He stormed over and spun me around by the shoulder. He paused when he got a good look at me, smirk spreading across his face.

     “Well, damn. You’re kinda cute.”

I rolled my eyes. The smell of his breath hitting me right after.

“Okay, step back like five feet. You smell like an entire locker room.”

Laughter rippled through the crowd. He didn’t like that.

Without warning, he grabbed my waist and pulled me toward him.

“Got a smart mouth, huh? You won’t be talking much when I—”

Before he could finish, the staff in pink suits walked in. Everyone turned to look—except this idiot. He still had a grip on me.

     “Let go,” I said, struggling.

     He didn’t.

Gi-hun came in fast, shoved him off me, and pulled me away while 101 hit the ground behind us.

“Thanks for that,” I said, catching my breath.

“Couldn’t just stand there and let that creep grab you.”

I gave him a nod, grateful. A few of the masked staff were watching us, but they turned back to the front as one of them stepped forward.

“Please follow the staff and make your way to the first game.”

I fell into line behind Gi-hun. There was a guy behind me with the number 199—he looked like a foreigner.

We stopped at what looked like a photo booth.

Seriously? Photos?

I waited a few minutes before it was my turn.

     “Please smile,” the machine said.

I gave the most half-assed smile I could manage. The machine clicked. I stepped aside and kept walking with the others.
