You were walking down a dim alleyway, trying to hide from some guys you owed money to-556 million won, to be exact. You'd stolen that much and ran. The only reason? Your little brother, Hwang-Lui. Nine years old. He was all you had.

"Come here, you bitch!"

I picked up my pace the moment I heard that. My foot snagged on something-rocks maybe-and I stumbled. Just as I rounded a corner, I slammed into a solid chest. I looked up.

Shit.

Without hesitation, I turned and ran. He was right behind me. I didn't make it far-I tripped, face-first onto the hard cement. Pain shot through my mouth. I think I chipped a tooth.

A hand grabbed my hair and yanked my head up.

The man leaned in, close enough to feel his breath.

"You thought you could just get away?"

I didn't answer, my eyes fixed on the ground.

"I'm talking to you, bitch." He spat in my face. I nearly gagged.

Who the fuck does that? Obviously, him.

I looked him in the eye. "I don't have the money, okay."

He tightened his grip, ripping out some strands.

"I gave you a month, Y/N. A MONTH."

"I promise...I'll get it. I just need one more month," I whispered, terrified he might snap.

He studied me, then smirked.

"One more month, huh? Alright. Let's make a deal."

I nodded quickly.

"If you don't pay me by the end of the month-I kill you. If you do-I let you live. Sound fair?"

Another nod.

He laughed and shoved me to the ground. Then he turned and walked off, his gang catching up behind him.

Later that Night》

I was at the train station, waiting for my ride home. Pulled out a cigarette, lit it, took a drag. Leaned against the dirty white wall.

Footsteps echoed nearby. Someone stopped next to me. I glanced right-a guy in a tux with a briefcase. He smiled and sat down beside me.

"Hi, Miss. Would you like to play a game with me?"

I stared. "Sorry, man. I don't play kiddie games."

He didn't react. Just calmly opened his briefcase on the bench. I side-eyed it-and froze.

Stacks of money. Millions. And two cards: one red, one blue.

"Alright...what scam is this?"

"This isn't a scam, ma'am."

I sighed. "Let me guess...ddakji?"

His smile widened. "Yes! If you win, I'll give you 100,000 won. If I win, I get the same from you."

I don't have that kind of money...

I hesitated, gave a nervous smile. "Yeah...I'm broke."

"Then pay with your body."

I blinked. Face heating up.

He caught my reaction and quickly clarified. "No, not like that. I mean-I'll pull your hair if I win."

Still kinda weird-but better than what I thought.

"Alright. Deal."

《20 Minutes Later》

For fuck's sake. I'd only won twice. He'd won seven times. This is exactly why I don't play games.

"Hey man," I muttered, rubbing my scalp, "my hair's gonna fall out if you keep this up."

He smirked. "Then how about this-every time I win, I kiss you on the cheek instead?"

Is this dude trying to flirt mid-game?

I rolled my eyes but agreed. I'd already said yes to the hair pulling.

Eventually, I won six more rounds-earning 800,000 won in total. He kissed me eight times. And to be honest...I didn't hate it. He was handsome. Too handsome. That didn't help.

"Let's wrap it up," he said, pulling out a rust-colored card. It had a circle, triangle, and square on it.

"If you want to play more games and win real money, call this number."

He handed it to me. On the back-just a phone number.

I looked up to say something, but he was already gone.

Should've asked for his name. Or his number.

《Back Home》

I got off the train and started walking home. It was freezing. And I was in shorts. Brilliant choice.

The cut on my lip burned every time I licked it.

Damn you, Cho-Woo.

Should've killed him when I had the chance.

When I reached the apartment, my little brother launched into my arms.

"Y/N! Why are you so late?" he asked, clinging to me.

"I had to talk to some people, sorry." I hugged him tighter. His tiny frame felt safe in my arms.

"Let's go out to eat. I finally have money for real food."

"Really?! Can we get ramen?!"

"Of course. Let's go."

He grinned and rushed to get his shoes.

We were halfway through our food when the card fell from my pocket.

"Y/N, what's that?" Lui asked, pointing.

"Oh, this?" I picked it up. "A job offer. I might be gone for a bit, but I'll leave you money for food."

"What? No! I don't want you to leave. I'm only nine..." He was pouting now.

I groaned. "Ugh, stop with the face! I have to. We need money. I promise I won't be long."

I held out my pinky. He linked his with mine.

"You better not be."

《Back Home》

That night, I called the number.

"Hello. If you wish to participate, please state your full name and birthdate."

The voice sounded robotic. Probably voice modulation.

I gave them the info.

"You will be picked up at 12 a.m. by a black van. Be ready."

How the hell do they know where I live...?

I sighed.

Well...if it means money, I'll risk it. I have to.

For Lui.

For his future.

To give him the childhood I never had.
