Xin Lan might be smart enough not to attack Xiao Li outright but that didn't mean that he wouldn't try to talk some sense into his fiance. "Xiao Yu, he is a demon."
He didn't know too much about Xiao Li but this much had to be true. At the very least, he had to be part demon if he was related to that man. Because he did not think that there was any way for somebody in the human realm to look so much like him without being related at all. That just wouldn't make any sense.
Unfortunately for him, the argument didn't hold much merit to Hua Lin Yu. He turned to look at him, his brows furrowing together. "He isn't a demon. He might be a half-blood but everyone fought so much to make sure that the half-bloods could live well without being hunted down. Do you really have to say such things? Even if you're angry, he doesn't deserve to be treated like this!"
Xin Lan gnashed his teeth, somehow feeling that back then, he shouldn't have helped the other sects against the demon-hunting sects. He had believed it was the right thing to do considering that his Master had been troubled by them back then but now, that was actually making his love life a little difficult.
Then again, maybe it wouldn't have changed anything. The real Xiang Yu had married a full-blooded demon despite being a trueborn god and knowing exactly what they were capable of. Hua Lin Yu was human and likely didn't know as much about the demons so he was even less likely to see reason just because he told him which race his chosen partner was a part of. No, this avenue wouldn't work.
Xin Lan tried to find something else he could say but it was difficult to come up with something. After all, he didn't really know anything about this Xiao Li. What was he supposed to use to make Hua Lin Yu doubt him? He couldn't think of anything.
He looked at the two of them, finding the sight more aggravating by the second. "Xiao Yu, is that really what you want? What about ... me? What about us?"
Hua Lin Yu looked at him, the same guilt in his gaze again. "I'm really sorry! But I already explained, didn't I? I ... I like you, a lot. It's just not enough. Not when there's Xiao Li."
Xin Lan didn't know what to say to that. He knew exactly why this was. It was because while Hua Lin Yu actually loved him, there was the obsession from his past life driving him toward this half-demon. But he couldn't explain that to him, could he?
He stared at him for a moment but then relaxed. Even if he couldn't say it outright, maybe he could lead him to understand it on his own. "And you sure that this is love? Was that also love in the dragon realm when you met Bai Mu? Don't you feel that there's something else going on?"
Hua Lin Yu froze. He had never told Xin Lan about Bai Mu. How did he ... "Did my older brother tell you?"
Xin Lan's brows furrowed and he actually clenched his hands more tightly. "So your brother knew. But you didn't bother telling me even though it was about us getting married.
"Well, I can hardly fault you. It is difficult to tell a man that you don't want to be together anymore because you believe you have fallen in love with somebody else, isn't it?
"Back then, you didn't tell me and just ran away when I asked you to finally have the ceremony. This time, I admit part of it was my fault but after seeing him, you once again ran away and didn't want to explain to me.
"Xiao Yu, be honest with yourself: Don't you feel that there's something else going on? Really, this isn't about your feelings. There's something more at play here."
Hua Lin Yu wasn't too sure about what to make of this. To be honest, his brother had said the same. But looking at Xiao Li, this was just how he felt! He had probably fallen in love at first sight and then he had mistaken Bai Mu for him. So yes, those feelings for Bai Mu hadn't actually been real because he had mistaken the person but that didn't mean that he loved Xiao Li any less.
Fate sometimes worked in the strangest of ways. One moment, it would be at the tip of your fingers but then it would be gone again. It might seem like you would never have a chance again, but then it could reappear on its own later on.
If that happened, it was like a miracle. Who was he to say that this wasn't right? No, since he had managed to meet Xiao Li again after missing him that first time he had seen him, he was sure that there had to be a reason for that. Yes, the two of them were meant for each other. So yes, this was love.
Xin Lan would probably never be able to understand because he hadn't found his fated partner yet. He felt sorry for him when he thought about that but he couldn't throw away his own happiness just because of pity. He would be doing himself a disservice with that and he would do the same to Xiao Li. That would be two people being unhappy just for the sake of one person not feeling as bad. Neither of them would find happiness then. Where was the sense in that?
Hua Lin Yu's gaze softened a little when he looked at Xin Lan and he shook his head. "I'm sorry, Xin Lan, I really am. I know you can't understand but this decision is final. I'm sorry but I can't be with you. I will be with Xiao Li from now on and I'm sure that I will never regret it."
Xin Lan stared at him, not sure what to do. He knew why this was happening but even so, he couldn't stop it. Even if he told him the full truth now, he didn't think that Hua Lin Yu would believe him and even if he did, he might still want to give it a try.
That was the draw of the obsession that the fallen gods felt. And even though Hua Lin Yu believed that he wouldn't regret it, Xin Lan was sure that he would. In any case, this kind of obsession wasn't the same as love, and no matter where it led, it couldn't be a good end. Otherwise, why would they have fallen in the first place?
