Chapter One
Calvin
“Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”
(Lance Armstrong.)
I looked outside the window as the rain poured down from the sky, as if each drop symbolized the tears that could not come out of my eyes. Right now, I hated everyone and everything for doing this to me. How could mom transfer me to a new school during my senior year?
She said, "It's not a big deal, you can make new friends right away".
Yeah! No big deal for Calvin Sparks to move to a new school during the senior year. There were two reasons why I didn't want to move to Douglas, Georgia. Reason number one: it took two years for me to come out to my friends in high school about my sexuality, and now when it’s finally done, my mom decided to move here.
Reason number two: the hottest guy on campus and I have been dating ; now chances were we would never see each other again, and most likely end up breaking up. Steve promised me after saying goodbye outside of my old house that he would text and call me every day and at every hour. So far, Steve has only texted me twice and has called me only once. Georgia and Texas are just a day and a half away by car, but still I was not yet legally an adult, so I wasn't able to make my own choices and go and visit at any given time.
That could be added to a third reason, I did not want to come here or be here. My friends back in Texas were planning on throwing me a big party this coming August thirteenth for my eighteenth birthday. Now the plans have been cancelled and I don't think I'm doing anything for my birthday.
"Calvin, come downstairs." My mom’s voice brought me back from my reverie and my face, which was stuck to the window for the past half hour, finally moved to look at the door of my room.
Blaming mom for bringing us to this town was not justifiable. It was not her fault dad died of cancer one year ago. Mom's working company transferred her over here to the only hospital in this county, so they were partially to blame as well. Coffee County is not as big as my hometown, but as we were driving through town earlier, some small attractions caught my eye. There is a small Wal-Mart, a K-Mart, a Chinese restaurant, a theater, and a bowling alley. If the town had at least a small mall everything could have been a little more fun but the town didn't have a mall, not even a small one. As I slouched my way downstairs, I saw mom getting ready for her first day at work.
"Are you leaving already?" I asked with sadness and desperation in my eyes.
"I'm sorry Calvin I know we just got here three hours ago, but I must go and check things at the hospital, but I will be back before midnight." She closed the space between us and kissed my cheek before grabbing her rain coat, her car keys and locking the door behind her.
Perfect! This was just what I needed; to spend the rest of my afternoon stuck here by myself with absolutely nothing to do. We didn't live far away from the town stores, but with this rain it would be impossible to go and make it back dry. I sat on the last step of the staircase looking outside and thinking of how soon it would become dark, and about what my friends were doing back home.
Soon seconds became minutes, minutes became hours and the clock struck midnight and my mom still hadn't returned. In the course of the last five hours I finished unpacking and getting everything ready for tomorrows first day of school, cooked dinner and finished cleaning the house. It would be difficult sleeping in a new room on a new bed.
