Chapter Nine
Calvin
"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear."
(H.P. Lovecraft.)
Two weeks had gone by since my first day of school, since my first chess meeting, since my birthday and Caleb’s party. Two weeks since the appearance of the mysterious man in the street that night and of the two deaths. It was not until Sunday of that same week when they found the body of two high school underclassmen just some miles away from Caleb’s house. The news of their demise spread all over the school about how they were brutally murdered.
I heard rumors about their bodies having two puncture wounds on their necks and how all the blood had been drained from their lifeless bodies. The police reported the deaths as an extremely savage wild animal attack. To me, no wild animal could have done that. Just leaving two bite marks on their necks, everything was strange. Things calmed down during the third week, people had stopped talking about the deaths and changed to the next interesting topic; homecoming.
Coffee High School’s tradition was to celebrate homecoming on its third week of school on the night of their first home football game. The dance was regularly held afterwards in the school gymnasium.
Caleb and I were spending all our time together in English, getting to know each other better. He was the one who explained to me all about the exciting tradition of the homecoming here in the school. For being the football captain he did not show much school spirit, at least not as much as the rest of the school and jocks. I could tell Caleb was different from the other football players but still had a reputation to maintain high standards for.
The homecoming festivities were just for the first football game of the year in the high school stadium, the crowning of the homecoming queen and king and lastly the traditional dance. Friday came faster than I expected bringing great festivities to the school for the grand homecoming night. Alena already had a date for the dance and I could tell Erin was not behind in getting one. Caleb must be asking her anytime soon if he has not asked her already. I could not concentrate all day on my classes with the big noises made by students in the hall, in the cafeteria and the classrooms. Mr. Saenz even gave us a free period to get ready for the night and attend the homecoming.
"Are you going tonight?" Alena and I were outside the parking lot enjoying our free period and getting some fresh air.
"I'm not sure, I had other plans." The best thing I could do is lie to get out of going to the homecoming and not feeling as a third wheel with Alena and Erin.
"Are you sure, it's our senior homecoming and it won’t come back." It broke my heart to lie to her, but I was not in the mood to attend any school dance or football game.
Caleb had invited me as well to go and see him play but nothing would change my mind from not going.
"I am sure, don't worry." Alena and I just enjoyed the rest of our time talking about school stuff and future plans. When the rest of the classes were dismissed Alena left home to get ready. At this time mom must have gone to work, so I decided to go and kill time at the school library.
During the past two weeks I have been trying to see how the white roses keep appearing out of nowhere. Four more had appeared within these two weeks, one on top of my bed, one in the bathroom and two outside tied with a red ribbon on a tree in the backyard. Every day I tried to understand why the roses kept coming as if it was a warning or representing some symbol, perhaps a hidden meaning. All these roses appeared during the night.
