Chapter Seven
Calvin
"We were given: Two hands to hold. To legs to walk. Two eyes to see. Two ears to
listen. But why only one heart? Because the other was given to someone else. For us to find."
(Unknown.)
Today I turn eighteen. Something I've been waiting for and something I hated at the moment. Mom woke me up last night at midnight with a small chocolate cake when she came back from work. She tried her best cheering me up and saying how sorry she was for not being able to make me something bigger. Her hospital called her to show up for another nine hour shift for the night. I had already mentioned my plans for the night, and she agreed and asked that I enjoy the party and have fun. During school I could not concentrate just thinking about tonight and what I would be wearing. Alena had told Erin and me she could pick us up to go to the party. When the bell for the last class rang, Alena gave me her number to call her so she could give us the times she'd be coming by for us.
At home I found a note from mom wishing me a happy birthday again and to enjoy the rest of the night. Alena would be picking me up around eight which left me a long time to get ready and enjoy the comfy silence of my house. Being happy right now to turn eighteen should be my main priority, but it was not.
I had the feeling of missing something in my life but I couldn't quite put my finger on what my life ached to possess. Upstairs in my room I looked through the closet at all my clothes for the best outfit to impress everyone. The best clothes I could find were my maroon polo shirt that I had bought recently, some blue tight jeans and red converse.
People would not be glad to see me at the party but Caleb had personally invited me. There was no other choice; I must attend and enjoy my birthday hanging out with my only two friends, Alena and Erin.
Erin suffered deep inside for losing her parents, not being able to see them ever again. I still remember the immense pain dads passing away from cancer had caused me. Memories of how slowly the cancer began to kill him flooded my thoughts. Mostly how he went from being a strong man to that weak being on the hospital bed.
Mom and I were devastated when he died, but dad wanted us to continue with our life. My dad was the first person I came out to, before mom or anyone else. He took the news better than mom as if he knew all along whom I really was. Tears flowed from my eyes dropping on the floor below me, I missed dad a lot.
Two hours later I was ready downstairs watching T.V while I waited for Alena to pick me up. The clothes made me look good, but not the way I would love them to look. With each minute I disliked the idea of going to the party, but how would Caleb feel if I didn't go?
Alena's blue convertible Porsche pulled outside my house honking for me to get out. It was not until then when I noticed another white rose tied with a red ribbon hanging loosely on the door knob.
What was the meaning of these white roses? Who was leaving them here and how are they getting inside the house?
I had shown mom the first white rose but she had never seen the rose before. Alena horn blaring, piercing the quiet of the night brought me back into reality of having to attend a party. I quickly locked the door behind me and made my way inside Alena's car. Erin already sat on the front seat, both of them looked fabulous.
Alena looked at my outfit before speaking." Hey Calvin, ready to party tonight?"
"Yes." My answer sounded forced, but it was better to lie than to tell the truth.
