Chapter Six

Caleb

“Time goes by fast, and people go in and out of your life so quickly, so you should never miss the opportunity to tell these people how much they mean to you”

(Unknown.)

The first week of school had gone by shockingly fast; I had finally managed to speak to Calvin. Fortunately, we were paired together for an assignment on Macbeth. The assignment was to create thirty discussion questions and provide suitable answers. We pulled our desks together and facing one another we began the assignment.

Tuesday and Wednesday had gone by similarly, with us working on the assignment but no conversation whatsoever. Then Thursday I finally gathered the nerve to talk to Calvin. During the week Calvin did all the work, as I lazed about, and when he was done for the day he simply handed me his paper.

Thursday, I started the conversation by asking Calvin why he let people take advantage of him. He thought I had asked him in regards to the food incident in the cafeteria, I corrected him and told him I had meant why he had just given me the answers to the assignment. Calvin responded by saying that he did it just because we were partners for now and for the rest of the year. After that we just sat about passing the time, we were the first group done with the assignment, thanks to Calvin.

It was my birthday today and my mother and father, like always, had planned a big celebration, against my will. I had seen in the front office on the bulletin board that today was Calvin's birthday as well. I wanted to personally invite Calvin to come but I wasn't sure how to ease the occasion into our conversation, or lack of it for the moment. I was getting nowhere just sitting and materializing plans in my head, I jumped into it, and preparation is damned.

"I would love for you to attend my party." I spoke "if you still don't have any plans." I corrected, today was his birthday as well, of course he had plans I regretted having brought up the topic.

I sat there awaiting an answer to my invitation and then it hit me.

"I know your probably thinking why go when half the school dislikes you, but I'm inviting you personally and as for half of the school they invited themselves." I added, it meant so much to me for him to say yes. Why? I didn't know.

"I will go, as long as I can take a friend." Calvin replied. I felt the greatest relief at having heard him say he would come. He being there would make the whole night worth it and more bearable.

"You mean Alena?" I asked him about the friend he planned on taking to my party. I had seen them around together so I just put one and one together.

Calvin smiled, then the bell rang and we both went our separate ways. The rest of the day went by almost dream like for me; the high light of my day had been Calvin accepting my invitation. It meant a lot to me that he was attending my party. Even though I hadn't wanted the party in the first place, I was now glad I had succumbed to the idea. Mother could be extremely persuasive, to the point of stubborn, when she had her mind set it just had to go her way.

I drove back home from a great day of school, preparations were underway thanks to my mom. The caterers had brought the food over and my mother, the expert on wine, had had all the drinks delivered to our home.
