Chapter Twelve

Caleb

"The sound of a kiss is not so loud as that of a cannon, but its echo lasts a great deal longer."

(Oliver Wendell Holmes.)

I awoke earlier then I usually did and got my mother to reserve a table at the finest restaurant in town. I called Erin as soon as the reservation had been made. I invited her out to eat and then we could go from there, thankfully she agreed. With plans for the afternoon made I asked Joyce to wash all my clothes, I wasn't sure what I was going to wear so I decided to lay out all my clothes before me to have as many options as possible.

I stood before forty or fifty pairs of jeans, a hundred or so dress shirts and t-shirts and twenty three pairs of shoes, mostly Converse. I deliberated my wardrobe for over an hour, finally I chose a dark blue La Crosse polo, a pair of faded light blue skinny jeans, they were the first pair I had ever bought, and went for my worn out white high top Converse. I placed the outfit on my bed and waited for seven to come around.

I helped mother remodel the living room; the furniture was all replaced, our old ones were donated to charity, the wall was to be professionally painted tomorrow and the black and white marble floor had been buffed and polished. The living room looked completely different once we were finished there we tackled Joyce’s room to be. The walls were painted peach, Joyce’s favorite color, and the curtains mother had bought were a low hued brown. We installed the blinds and curtains, the new white comforter set was placed upon the queen sized bed, and the mattresses had been replaced as well.

A dresser and small cabinet were purchased as gifts for Joyce, they were mahogany, mothers favorite wood. The cabinet was beside the bed for easy access and the dresser was in front of the bed on the farthest wall. Placed upon the small cabinet was Joyce’s new phone, mother needed to stay in touch with her in case she needed advice or assistance. After Joyce’s room, mother and I polished the glass table in the kitchen and the windows, the light entered more freely and brightened the rooms dramatically. We weren't even finished when I noticed the time and scrambled upstairs to take a shower and get ready for my date. I gave myself a quick once over in the vanity mirror, pleased with what I saw, I left downstairs. I ran into mother while I gave her a kiss on the cheek and a hug as she wished me good luck.

Erin's house had been easy to find, once in my car I had trouble keeping my eyes on the road. Erin wore her hair curled, the dark ringlets spiraled down her face and made her look paler, her cocktail dress was dark blue, it hour-glassed at the waist fitting her body nicely, her high heels were silver, the laces wrapped around her ankles, and around her neck was a thin gold chain, hanging from the chain was a gold heart locket.

Erin looked marvelous, she looked like a goddess. Her eyes twinkled under the passing overhead lights. I looked her way and caught her staring at me as well, when we caught each other we both laughed. I grasped her left hand with my right hand, I rubbed her hand with my thumb and my actions were reciprocated, when Erin rubbed my hand with her thumb I got goose bumps along my arms and my heart accelerated. I turned to Erin and noticed her blushing, the rosy complexion on her cheeks made her look even more desirable. We arrived at the restaurant and the valet parked my car, Erin and I walked inside, hands firmly grasping another for dear life. Once we stepped inside all heads turned our way, Erin giggled and looked to me.

"I bet you're used to it by now." she replied at the army of stares directed our way.

My anger peaked but I managed to control my words. "They're not staring at me Erin, they're staring at you." I replied. The men in the restaurant were undressing Erin with their eyes and the looks the women gave seemed venomous, filled with loathe and jealousy.
