Chapter Eight
Caleb
“The key to change... is to let go of fear.”
(Rosanne Cash.)
My party had been almost two weeks ago but still students were talking about it. After my party though, a pair of students from our school, underclassmen, had been reported missing. Their bodies had been found intact, the strange thing though was how both bodies were drained of blood and along the neck were two small puncture wounds.
The police have no leads but suspect the deaths are due to an animal attack. The creature responsible for draining the blood of the two kids hasn't been found. The police, and even some of the town people, have banded together and combed through the forests of the town but all was to no avail. The mysterious creature seemed to have vanished into thin air.
Calvin and I have become closer, we only hang out in English class but we are definitely closer, almost brothers in a way. I have yet to be introduced to Mrs. Sparks; I know that she works at the hospital but nothing more. We talked and joked around and still managed to turn in all our work, which was due to Calvin who is wicked smart.
Today is homecoming game, and as custom dictates, its Friday as well. I searched for Erin throughout the day to invite her to the homecoming dance as my date, but so far I haven't seen her. I decided to make things easier so I texted her and told her to meet me after third block at the doors of the Senior Garden.
I walked to the Senior Garden, all of third block I kept staring at the clock willing it to move faster. There at the doors stood Erin, wearing a white shirt with black polka dots that hugged her tiny waist, a pair of black skinny jeans making her look taller and white flats. She smiled as she saw me coming her way; her smile took my breath away as it always did.
"Hey" she said. "What’s up?" she asked; she smelled of lavender.
"I wanted to ask you to be my date for homecoming." I replied, "That is if someone else hasn't already asked you, or if you planned on going with someone else." I added. I didn't want her to feel compelled to say yes if she didn't want to.
"Let me think about it... I'd love to be your date!" she rebutted; rather quickly she hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. With that, Erin turned around and walked away. I noticed pep in her step that hadn't been there before.
I checked out of school to go and pick up my tux for the dance, on my way home my mind wandered to the black roses that appeared at random. The roses were always placed somewhere where I was sure to find them; on the vanity mirror, on my bed, in my closet, in my car or by my laptop. The roses were always black in color and no matter how careful I was I always managed to prick myself with its thorns. Mother told me she had no idea about the roses. I asked father who had no clue about anything that went on in the confines of our home. I then asked Joyce if anyone had come by to drop off a rose but she told me that absolutely no roses were delivered to my house. Now, when I find a rose, I throw it away but after pricking my fingers first.
I turned down the drive to my house, I could see father standing outside surrounded by many suitcases. I was shocked to see him crying. I practically ran out of my car before I stopped it and went to where mother and father were arguing.
"Can't just expect me to stay at home while you’re God knows where with God knows who." my mother was saying. I noticed that at her feet were a good many bottles of liquor.
