Nelson and Morgan went over to the back door through the kitchen, it was horrifically cold in the back of the house. Tiles and wind were to blame.
There was a curtain over the door, maybe to keep the heat in, either way it was obvious that she only used the front door. Not that she ever left the house.
Drawing it back they were thankful to see the key was already in the lock, all they had to do was turn it.
"Where should we go?" Nelson asked as they got themselves out of the house.
Morgan was mellow, as if nothing creepy had just gone on, "We should go have some fun. You got any money on you?"
"I have some change. Why?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Nelson already figured out the answer. Morgan really hadn't wanted to be dragged along that evening. They truly believed that if they had been a few years older, enough to be classified as a young adult, that they would have been about to stay home to be included in the Halloween party. Being booted out to spend the evening with other kids wasn't how they wanted to spend their evening.
At least a funfair would be entertaining, even if it was in the middle of nowhere.
"But-"
Morgan gave Nelson a death stare, "We're going to that funfair. We are going to go on some rides, play some games and then we can sort out whatever we need to in that house."
He didn't want to argue even if wasn't sure it was a good idea.
The funfair was huge considering where it had been placed. Everything a fair needs. From the haunted house to the candy floss stand, every ride or stall was in operation. Music blaring and the sound of rides rotating and sliding.
Yet there were no people...
It wasn't just that it was quiet. There was absolutely no one. Not a single guest or member of staff running the stall.
"It's totally deserted," Nelson breathed in skepticism.
"Sweet!" Morgan expelled, jumping over one of the stalls to get a better look at all the attractions, seeing what they wanted to go on first.
A voice of reason, "Don't you think there's something wrong if all of this is still running but no one's around?" Nelson asked distrustfully.
Ignoring him, Morgan made their way to the middle of the funfair, engulfed in the buoyant music. They became immersed when they saw the hook-a-duck stall, to which they slid into the inner hoop where the conductor was meant to be. It wasn't long before they pulled out two of the 'fishing rods' used to play the game.
Nelson approached dubiously, taking the rod that was handed to him.
The pair turned to the ducks, floating aimlessly in the ring of water.
As Nelson went to hook a duck, Morgan gently nudged him, forcing him to lose his balance before he could retrieve the duck. Following from there, Morgan pretended that they had selected a duck to hook but it was a cover up. Competitively, Morgan used their rod to knock into Nelson. Making it difficult once again.
Letting out a belt of laughter, Morgan was caught off guard, "Is that water moving?"
Nelson shrugged, "Is it not meant to?"
"No..."
The pair lowered their hooks and checked the game circle. The water was moving a little but barely enough to form a ripple. There were six ducks in the water, all yellow rubber ducks with red lips bobbing up and down faintly.
As they stood watching, it became evident that the water was moving, it was building too. It splashed around the edges and against the ducks as if a propeller was underneath, forcing the water to move. The ducks turned to face them, instinctively and from their plastic mouths grew shards, bright teeth.
At the sight of it, both teens turned to flee. But the ducks were alive, enlarging as they freed themselves. Using the two player hooks as leverage to get closer. with their beaks, the two closest ducks took hold of each teen, bringing them into the inner circle, to the water.
Submerging them into the water, all six enlarged demon ducks played a part in holding the heads under water. Keeping them down until eventually the water had filled their lungs. When their bodies stopped flapping around, the ducks decided their work was done. They shrunk back down to normal size and their mouths returned to plastic. Simply nudging off the bodies, they returned to the water, to their game. Ready for the next round of hook-a-duck
