How could this have happened?
Nelson dropped to his knees.
Amy leaned into him.
Neither could make sense of it.
But he had to be strong, for her sake. Turning to face her, he wiped both cheeks to dry them.
Leaning over the body, Nelson shut the young boy's eyes and shooed away the rats. Respectfully taking both of his hands and lying them in a memorial type position. If his entire stomach wasn't outside of his body, he might have looked peaceful.
"Nelson..." Amy choked, "His hand..."
It hadn't become clear until moving him, one hand was clenched and the other wasn't.
Amy had not only seen this but also that her brother had been holding something, quite possibly before and up until the moment that he died.
Upon further inspection, it was a key.
"I'm pretty sure this fits the front door," Nelson explained.
The pair of them went back over to the hole in the ceiling, with Morgan's help, they were able to get out. The key worked and all three were left unharmed. The police were called and within half an hour their parents came to console them.
But on a search of the house, everything was normal...
Missing person's posters went up for Axel and Granny R.
The therapists didn't believe Amy and Nelson's story, the room beneath the stairs was gone, as if it never even existed.
