Emerald sighed, "I don't know what do with you anymore, Alex. You just never seem to be pleased! So you look at some jewelry, some idiot makes a joke, and you decide to start a fight?" Hearing her say it like that, I felt kind of stupid. However, she and I both knew that I wasn't going to back down.
"Emerald," I began to explain, "You know it's not as simple as that. This girl was a total brat, I swear if you had just seen her giant, fake hair, you would have hated her. Can we get over this now? It was just one little fight." Even though this girl had been one of my closest friends for years, I kind of thought of her as a motherly figure.
Not because we ot in big fights over stupid things or because she didn't let me stay up late (which sometimes she didn't), but because she was always looking out for me. Or, you know, scolding me for doing something wrong. I still loved her though, which was why I allowed her to be sitting next to me in my living room couch.
Emerald raised her eyebrows and repeated, "One little fight? Al, you get in fights like every week. I love you to death, but you need to learn to control yourself. Your dad is probably getting sick of it, and you know even better than I do how he gets when he's mad." I sighed, knowing that she was right. I couldn't tell her that, of course.
"You know what you need?" she continued. "A distraction. Let's join a sport or a club or something! Or get you a boyfriend! We only have a few years left of being teenagers, you know." I laughed, but on the inside froze. I was immediately reminded of Niall's comment a couple of nights ago, and then all the calls I had been receiving then ignoring because I didn't know the number.
They had to be from the boys, right? I hadn't told Emerald about our meeting, and I didn't plan on it. She had already mentally set me up with three guys (two of which were celebrities), so how would she feel if I told her I might actually have a shot at not being single? She would freak out.
I put those thoughts aside and admitted, "Alright, you're right about that one. I guess we're only young for so long, eh? But I don't know that a boyfriend or a sport will fix that." She laughed a little and nodded. Emerald's eyes drifted upwards as she thought about something to distract, but honestly, I didn't want a distraction.
"Look, Em," I said, "I really appreciate your concern, but I don't need it. You know you're like one of my closest friends ever, so will you please trust me to handle my own life? I promise I'll try to stay out of trouble." I smiled sheepishly at her and she rolled her eyes, laughing.
"Yeah I'm sorry, Al, I just don't want to see something really bad happen. Can you imagine what would happen? Your dad would..." I shot her a look and Emerald smartly closed her mouth. She then rephrased, "It'a just risky for your secret. Hey where is your dad anyways?"
So you know what I said earlier about being a super major secret? Well I seriously wasn't joking. Emerald was one of about five people who knew of my true identity, one other being my father and two more were my grandparents. The only other person who knew who I was was Officer Brad. To everyone else I was Alexandra White, not Cowell.
"He's at some meeting or something. Speaking of which, you had better head home. He didn't know you were coming over, and he should be home any minute," I explained. Em nodded disappointedly, and I could tell she did not really appreciate my dishonesty towards my dad. But if she wanted to talk about it, she would have to wait.
Just then, the sound of a car rolling up the driveway seemed to fill the entire room. That wasn't even the reason Emerald and I shared gigantic eyes, though - the real problem was that there were TWO cars. What could this mean? That he had brought someone home from the meeting.
And after they had gotten out of the cars, their voices alerted us that it was not an extra someone but five extra someones. Emerald sent me a panicked look as I tried to think of an escape. It was too late to get upstairs, so I grabbed her wrist and dragged her toward the kitchen.
