Akeela realized that her calm composure had gone into extinction ever since she got home. She was always angry, furious, and restless.
Why the hell were her parents doing what they are doing? Why were they making decisions for her as if she was still a child? Why were they treating her like she had no say over her own life?
She hadn't overcome the fact of meeting Jamal who was her groom-to-be. And they were already talking about the wedding date. They fixed the wedding date without consulting her as usual.
She didn't join them for lunch after the announcement, instead, she stormed to her room in anger. She didn't know when the guests left and she locked her door, in a bid to prevent her mom or anyone else from coming into her room to scold or preach words to her.
She needed to be alone. With her thoughts.
Jamal was no longer the cute little guy she used to have a crush on. She always found herself looking at his picture anytime she goes to Haneefah's home. He had transformed into a damn good-looking guy.
He was indeed handsome!
But Akeela tried to stop herself from getting lost in his handsomeness. What excited her about his looks was his beard. Soft and smooth looking. Glowing and so beautiful.
She loved beards. He couldn't keep his eyes off her all through the program. His eyes were shades of pure white. He looked calm and patient. His nose was small and his mouth was too. They looked pretty. Her full lashes were out of the world.
She sighed and closed her eyes.
The ringing sound of her phone made her open her eyes back. It was a face-timing video call from Isabella.
"Keela", Fiona's voice boomed before her face appeared. Akeela braced herself up for the scolding from the iron lady.
"Fiona", she called calmly.
"Where the hell have you been? We've been calling you all day. What the hell happened?" She screamed.
"I'm sorry......."
"What happened, Keela?" Isabella questioned from the background. Her face wasn't showing.
"A lot", Akeela confessed.
Someone gasped and Isabella's face showed on the screen. "What is it?"
"Did something happen to any of your parents?" Fiona asked. "You didn't get the job?"
"No," Akeela responded. Then she remembered she hadn't checked the appointment letter her mother said was in her drawer.
She forgot about it. And she was supposed to resume work the next day. She needed to get prepared and find a suitable dress for her first day at work.
"First impression", her father would say. "Lasts forever."
"Why are you dressed up? You went out?" Isabella's question brought her out of her reverie.
She regretted allowing Haneefah to make her up. It was obvious Jamal found her attractive. If that wasn't the case, he wouldn't have said he was willing to let go of his girl for her when she was still not yet ready to let go of Fred, even though he was more handsome than Fred, Akeela thought.
Should I just let him I don't like him? She asked within her. Maybe that would make him change his mind about the date, about her and the wedding will be canceled. He had fixed the next weekend for their date.
She enjoyed the conversation with him no doubt but the news of the wedding date had dampened her spirit. She was yet to fully take in everything and a wedding date was already in the picture.
