chapter 9: the sorting

Everyone was now outside the great hall in their uniforms waiting to be allowed in to be sorted into the 4 houses of Hogwarts. Roman was practically bouncing up and down in excitement about being sorted. Logan was just watching him with his arms crossed. Remus was held still by Janus or he would have been running around in excitement and causing chaos. Patton was smiling widely and looked around at all the other first years. That's when Patton noticed Virgil. Virgil was having a panic attack. He was hyperventilating. His face had gone really pale, almost white. Virgil was clutching at his chest. His eyes were wide and full of fear.

Patton looked to see if anyone had noticed but no one had so he slowly went over to Virgil, even if Patton didn't know the boy's name or who he was. "Hey, are you ok?'' Patton asked in a calming voice. Virgil flinched back and looked at Patton in fear, becoming more panicked. Patton seemed to notice because he said "I'm not going to hurt you kiddo. I'm here to help". Virgil nods in understanding. "Now, can I hold you?'' Patton asked carefully. Virgil hesitantly nods and leans into Patton's chest as Patton hugs him. "I need you to try and copy my breathing. Can you do that for me?" Patton asked calmly. Virgil slowly listened to Patton's breathing and tried to copy. It took a while but eventually Virgil had been able to copy Patton's breathing and had calmed down. He slowly moved out of Patton's hold and mumbled "Thank you". Patton smiled widely and said "you're welcome. My name is Patton Sanders by the way". Virgil fidgets nervously and was about to tell Patton his name when the doors to the great hall opens. "I have to go back to my friends. see you later, Kiddo'' Patton said before rushing back over to Roman and Logan.

All the first years were led into the great hall by professor Longbottom and were told to stand in front of a stool which had an old looking hat on it. Suddenly the hat started to sing which made the muggle raised people shocked.

'Oh you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap!
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm a Thinking Cap!'

The room filled with loud clapping and cheers from everyone in the room as the hat finished singing. The clapping and soon stopped as professor Longbottom started talking "When I call your name, sit on the stool and the sorting hat will place on your head"

"August, Linda"

"Bows, Jonny"

Gryffindor

"Grant, Janus"

This peaked everyone's interest as the last grant that went Hogwarts instead of another wizarding school was years before Tom Riddle came to Hogwarts. Janus smirks as he walks towards the stool, his snakes still on his shoulders. He sits on the stool and waits to be sorted. The hat barely touched his head before shouting

"slytherin"

Janus gets up and goes and sits at the slytherin table.

-tiny time skip because I can't name kids-

"Picani, Logan"

Logan walked over to the stool and sat down without showing any emotion on his face. The hat was hardly on his head before the hat shouted

"Ravenclaw!"

Logan proudly got up, walked over to the ravenclaw table and sat down.

"Royalty, Remus"

Remus goes over to the stool and jumps onto the stool, Smirking as a nasty thought goes into his head as the hat was placed on his head. The hat took a couple of minutes debating whether Remus should be in slytherin or Gryffindor. But finally it shouted

"Slytherin!"

Remus got up and ran over to the slytherin table before sitting down next to Janus. Remus boo's as the next person was called up to the stool.

"Royalty, Roman"

Roman proudly walks over to the stool and sits down with his legs crossed on the stool. The touched his head and straight away shouted

"Gryffindor"

Roman got up and proudly walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down.

"Sanders, Patton"

Patton skipped over to the stool happily and sat down on the stool. The hat didn't even touch his head before shouting

'Hufflepuff '

"but I haven't even worn you yet"

'It's your first day and you're already making friendship bracelets'

"it's never too late to make memories"

'Definitely a Hufflepuff'

Patton shrugs, gets up and skips over to the Hufflepuff table and sits down.

"Storm, Virgil"

Virgil could feel his level's of anxiety raise as his name was called. He looks down trying to sink into himself as he walks over to the stool. He sits on the stool and curls into himself as he thinks 'I don't fit into any houses. I'm gonna get kicked out and sent home' as he started to panic more. Virgil flinched as the hat started talking to him.

'Quite the contrary, my dear. You actually fit into any house. You can calm down. I'm not going to hurt you and no one here is going to hurt you either. You are safe. Now where to put you '

Virgil nods slightly. It takes another 10 minutes before the hat finally shouts

"Better be SLYTHERIN!"

Virgil flinches at the shouting before rushing over to the slytherin table and sitting next to Remus and curling into himself.

After everyone was sorted and everyone had eaten, everyone went to their common rooms and was shown their dorms. There were not enough slytherin dorms so Remus, Janus and Virgil had to share a room but they were fine with it.
