CHAPTER 45

Azrael knew working while nursing a hangover was a deadly combination.

Somehow, his day was fully booked with meetings. He barely ate breakfast and lunch. He was supposed to go to Baguio tomorrow but he might defer for now.

Whatever happened yesterday took a toll on him. Pang-distract na lang niya sa sarili ang pagtatrabaho. Kung wala siyang gagawin, magmumukmok lang naman siya.

Tinignan niya ang cellphone pero wala siyang nakita o natanggap na mensahe kay Nyx. Is she still upset? Did she get home safely?

The day went on and as his last meeting ended, wala pa ring text si Nyx sa kanya.

While going to the office, he called her mother.

"Magandang gabi po. Nakarating na po ba si Nyx diyan?"

"Ah sabi niya hindi raw muna siya uuwi. Hindi ba niya nabanggit sa iyo?"

"Ah...baka nakalimutan niya. Tatawagan ko na lang po siya."

He looked up her number but she wasn't answering when he dialled.

Maybe she is still mad?

Hinilot niya ang batok habang palabas ng elevator. He wants to go home. He's tired as fuck. Hindi rin biro ang ma-stuck sa meeting ng buong araw. It kept his mind off Nyx but now he's worried sick about her. He'll check with the hotel if she's still there.

Nang makarating sa floor ng opisina niya ay napansin niyang wala na ang sekretarya niya. Pinauwi na niya ang sekretarya niya ng maaga dahil male-late siya ng uwi. He doesn't want him to wait past 5:30.

Pumasok siya sa opisina at sinara ang pinto niyon. The room felt different as if someone was there.

Binuksan niya ang ilaw at napatigil siya nang makita si Nyx na nakatulog sa sofa ng opisina niya.

He silently walked and squatted by her side. She looked tired and her eyes are puffy. Like him, it must have been a long night for her. 

He exhaled. He is still pained by what she said yesterday but he hopes things will be better when they get to talk now that they are calmer.

He kissed the top of her head and turned off the light. When he sat on his desk, nakita niya ang isang photo frame with their picture on it. He smiled. He remembered that day. She just looked beautiful in the middle of a farm full of flowers like she's a fairy. His fairy.

Inalis niya ang nakaipit na envelope at binasa ang laman niyon.

Happy Birthday, Azrael!

Masaya ako na kasama kita ngayon para i-celebrate ang birthday mo.

You deserve all the love, luck, and happiness in the world.

Pasensya ka na at ito lang ang nakayanan ko. Meron ka na lahat ng bagay sa mundo. 

Ang kaya ko na lang ibigay sa iyo ay mas masasaya pang alaala.

Sana ay hayaan mo akong maging parte pa ng mga susunod mong kaarawan. At pati ibang importanteng bahagi ng buhay mo.

Mahal na mahal kita.

He smiled despite still being sad and hurt. This is the reason why he loves Nyx so much. Nakikita niyang ito ang kasama niya sa mga susunod pang taon. Ito lang ang nakalapit sa kanya ng ganito. For the first time in his life, he wanted to commit to someone.

Itinabi niya ang frame sa may monitor niya para nakikita niya iyon agad.

Inalis niya ang coat niya at niluwagan ang necktie niya. He stood up and grabbed himself a glass of scotch. He stood by the window watching the traffic below the building.
