Another day, another trip to my new workplace with Danny.
I swiped on some lip gloss in the mirror I had pulled down from the roof of my car as Danny tapped on the wheel along to the beat of 'El mañana' by Gorillaz. We were at a red light so I took this as an opportunity to freshen up, simply fixing my hair and my face. Danny caught onto what I was doing and gave a one-sided smirk to me. I continued and let him admire me. He started to move as the light moved from yellow to green.
I put away my lip balm and gave myself one last look over, closing the mirror and diverting my eyes to the wet road ahead. The rain pattered on the windows. I slouched in my chair as I toyed with a brooch on Danny's trench coat, it had a simple white rose on it. Classy? But I felt like it meant more to him that it seemed. Therefore, I spoke up, "that's a pretty brooch, where'd you get it?" His eyes flickered to me for a second before going back to the road. His hand almost flinched at the question but he just gripped the leather of the steering wheel. "My mother. It's all I have left of her." He let out a huff, as if he was uncomfortable. "I'm sorry, Danny. Wanna talk about it?" I frowned as we came to another stop. "Yes. I can explain to you, I believe that you'll understand and comfort me." He looked to me, relying on the facial expression I gave, which, I'd imagine was a pitiful eye. He took this as a signal to continue. "Well, my first kill was my dad. He used to hit my mum. (Sorry Americans). He shot her one night and that's when I snapped." He squeezed the skin on his forehead with his thumb and index finger, a new habit he'd demonstrated when in stress. "I don't blame you, my condolences though. Your mum didn't deserve what that asshole did to her, poor woman." I took a breath to speak more about how I empathised before he interrupted. I let him speak.
"You have her eyes. Soft and pure... I will not let you die. Not like her. You will pass in my arms, peacefully of all things. But you will never wither, my love, for I will always be the blood in your veins and the blood that will bleed from your foes." Danny, as deep and touching as his words were, simply held my face and made eye contact while saying this. He knew the impact these words had on me, and he waited as they sunk in. "And, I'll find out who's sending you those messages." He added, as we continued driving. "Thank you, for everything. I love you." "I love you too."
The Gazette.
"Mr. Olsen, get ready to go photograph the new art downtown. It's a local hot spot." June smoked a nasty-smelling cigarette and Danny just glared while his eyes couldn't decide whether to shoot dirty looks at her or the ashtray beneath her arm. "Ok." He straightened his coat with a smooth hand. "Y/n, darling, will you grab me my gray hard cover book, June and I need to talk." I nodded and swiftly entered his office.
I rolled out his drawers that sat under his desktop area. I was met with multiple colour arranged files and booklets, journals and all of the sort. In controversy to the room I had witnessed him live in at home. It really was like two people behind those beautiful eyes. I dug through, looking for a specific gray book with a hard cover, but another red flimsy one caught my eye. I tried, oh, I tried to ignore it. Something drew me to it like a moth to a flame. I needed to see what was in there. I looked through the small window above a smaller loveseat to the one I sat on yesterday and saw Danny supposedly criticising June. I judged this by the fact that he was all up
in her face and had a cross-looking face. I quickly snagged the book and flicked through the pages. Sticky notes filled an entire page.** Harriet ??? **
24 - has a dog - has a housekeeper. Free day - Saturday. Goes out to Windsdale Park on the regular.** Jamie Edwards **
31 - lives alone - no relations - lives on outskirts of Mentetwin. Very easy target.
Danny had memorised people's schedules... that's when I came across one that sounded a little too familiar muddled up in the middle of a bunch of random guy's names.
** ??? ??? ** - MUST DO!
21 - lives in a quiet house - has a sister - be careful, she's aware - works at Dynamite bar.
That was me! I was a victim, well a planned one. I totally forgot what happened before, woah.
"Y/n, are you ok? You're taking long."
Danny popped in. "Shit, yeah sorry." I closed the book and slotted it back into place, him luckily not caring. "This one?" I found the grey book almost instantly as if the red one had blinded me of anything but itself before I read it. "Thank you! Come on now, don't get too comfy, we gotta be down at the hall." He smiled at me, grabbing a camera off a hook on the wall, by its leather strap. "Use this for photos, it was June's from whenever, she pops in from time to time and returns it after. Other than that, she doesn't do much." He rolled his eyes. Luckily, I had taken a very convenient photography course for GCSEs. "You know how to use it, I trust." He almost read my mind. "Yup, also why not just fire her?" We headed out through the building, seeing as June was in the bathroom and couldn't hear our shit talk. Not like I cared, just didn't wanna deal with her bullshit. I had only known her for a bit but her overall aura just sucked. Damn.
